Mormon leaders have acknowledged for the first time that the church’s founder and prophet, Joseph Smith, portrayed in church materials as a loyal partner to his loving spouse Emma, took as many as 40 wives, some already married and one only 14 years old.

The church’s disclosures, in a series of essays online, are part of an effort to be transparent about its history at a time when church members are increasingly encountering disturbing claims about the faith on the Internet. Many Mormons, especially those with polygamous ancestors, say they were well aware that Smith’s successor, Brigham Young, practiced polygamy when he led the flock in Salt Lake City. But they did not know the full truth about Smith.

“Joseph Smith was presented to me as a practically perfect prophet, and this is true for a lot of people,” said Emily Jensen, a blogger and editor in Farmington, Utah, who often writes about Mormon issues.

She said the reaction of some Mormons to the church’s disclosures resembled the five stages of grief in which the first stage is denial, and the second is anger. Members are saying on blogs and social media, “This is not the church I grew up with, this is not the Joseph Smith I love,” Ms. Jensen said.

Smith probably did not have sexual relations with all of his wives, because some were “sealed” to him only for the next life, according to the essays posted by the church. But for his first wife, Emma, polygamy was “an excruciating ordeal.”

The four treatises on polygamy reflect a new resolve by a church long accused of secrecy to respond with openness to the kind of thorny historical and theological issues that are causing some to become disillusioned or even to abandon the faith.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as the Mormon Church is formally known, has quietly posted 12 essays on its website over the last year on contentious topics such as the ban on blacks in the priesthood, which was lifted in 1978, and accounts of how Smith translated the Book of Mormon, the church’s sacred scripture.

Elder Steven E. Snow, the church historian and a member of its senior leadership, said in an interview, “There is so much out there on the Internet that we felt we owed our members a safe place where they could go to get reliable, faith-promoting information that was true about some of these more difficult aspects of our history.

“We need to be truthful, and we need to understand our history,” Elder Snow said. “I believe our history is full of stories of faith and devotion and sacrifice, but these people weren’t perfect.”

The essay on “plural marriage” in the early days of the Mormon movement in Ohio and Illinois says polygamy was commanded by God, revealed to Smith and accepted by him and his followers only very reluctantly. Abraham and other Old Testament patriarchs had multiple wives, and Smith preached that his church was the “restoration” of the early, true Christian church.

Most of Smith’s wives were between the ages of 20 and 40, the essay says, but he married Helen Mar Kimball, a daughter of two close friends, “several months before her 15th birthday.” A footnote says that according to “careful estimates,” Smith had 30 to 40 wives.

The biggest bombshell for some in the essays is that Smith married women who were already married, some to men who were Smith’s friends and followers.

The essays held nothing back, said Richard L. Bushman, emeritus professor of history at Columbia University and author of the book “Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling.”

Dr. Bushman said of church leaders: “Somewhere along the line they decided they were just going to tell the whole story, not to be defensive, not to try to hide anything. And there’s no single fact that’s more unsettling than Joseph Smith’s marriage to other men’s wives.

“It’s a recognition of maturity,” said Dr. Bushman, who is a Mormon. “There are lots of church leaders who say: ‘We can take anything, just let us know how it really happened. We’re a church that is secure.’ ”

The younger generation of Mormons will benefit from this step, said Samantha Shelley, co-founder of the website MillennialMormons.com in Provo, Utah.

She said she knew of Smith’s polygamous past, but “it’s so easy for people these days to stumble upon something on the Internet, and it rocks their world and they don’t know where to turn.”

In 1890, under pressure by the American government, the church issued a manifesto formally ending polygamy. The church’s essay on this phase admits that some members and even leaders did not abandon the practice for years.

But the church did renounce polygamy, and Mormons who refused to do the same eventually broke away and formed splinter churches, some that still exist. Warren Jeffs, the leader of one such group, was convicted in Texas in 2011 of child sexual assault.

There remains one way in which polygamy is still a part of Mormon belief: The church teaches that a man who was “sealed” in marriage to his wife in a temple ritual, then loses his wife to death or divorce, can be sealed to a second wife and would be married to both wives in the afterlife. However, women who have been divorced or widowed cannot be sealed to more than one man.

Kristine Haglund, the editor of Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, said that while she found the church’s new transparency “really hopeful,” she and other women she had talked with were disturbed that the essays do not address the painful teaching about polygamy in eternity.

“These are real issues for Mormon women,” Ms. Haglund said. “And because the church has never said definitively that polygamy won’t be practiced in heaven, even very devout and quite conservative women are really troubled by it.”

The church historian, Elder Snow, said that the process of writing the essays began in May 2012. Each one was drafted by a scholar, often outside the church history department, then edited by church historians and leaders, and vetted by the church’s top authorities. They may issue one more essay, on women and the priesthood, an issue that has grown increasingly controversial as some Mormon women have mobilized to challenge the male-only priesthood.

The church has not publicly announced the posting of the essays, and many Mormons said in interviews that they were not even aware of them. They are not visible on the church’s home page; finding them requires a search or a link. Elder Snow said he anticipated that the contents would eventually be “woven into future curriculum” for adults and youths.

The church recently released an informational video about the distinctive Mormon underwear called “temple garments” — and it received far more attention among Mormons and in the news media than the essays on polygamy.

We applaud the Mormon hierarchy for gradually becoming more open about the sexual behavior of its founder, especially the fact that Joseph Smith took a 14 year old “bride” which constitutes child sexual abuse.

But now, church officials should unequivocally denounce child sexual abuse and tell and remind their flock that it is always illegal and immoral for any adult to have any sexual contact with any child. And they should beg anyone with information or suspicions about child sex crimes – past or present – to call police and prosecutors now.

“That’s not needed. Everyone knows this,” some may protest. But this is a reckless assumption, especially in a denomination with a sordid history of secrecy around sexual crimes and misdeeds. If such a strong and clear declaration helps embolden one person who saw, suspected or suffered child sex crimes in a Mormon church or family to call law enforcement, it will have been worth it.

Reversing decades of sexual secrecy and misconduct in any institution is tough. It requires repeated and vigorous action, including public statements.

My friend Tom Leith notes that most people view marriage as a legal or consensual arrangement, not as an ontological change. By "ontological change" he means a change in our very being.

There are many of these ontological changes that we go through in our lives. Adolescence is the first big one, one in which we grapple with the great change of going from being a child to being an adult. But we recognize other ontological changes in life as well, if only subconsciously.

When a man becomes a father or a woman becomes a mother, we realize that this changes who we are. At least we used to recognize that readily. Many people are very casual about this ontological change these days and don't recognize the responsibility suddenly thrust upon them by becoming different people from what they once were. And we fathers are surprised to learn that, foolish and inept as we sometimes are, our children nonetheless view us as entirely different sorts of creatures from every other person on the planet. Mommy or Daddy is something other and something greater than Aunt or Uncle or brother or sister. Our kids see that, sometimes to our embarrassment and chagrin. ...

And the higher the goal, the greater the disparity when we don't reach it.

Take, for instance, Holy Orders. I'm becoming more and more convinced that the majority of bishops and even a solid contingent of priests are not only bad at what they do (which is to be expected, as they are called to be remarkably great), but simply scoundrels, bad men who have adopted a mask that allows them to exercise their badness is ways that normal people can't.

Here's a long description of a priest who simply appears to be a predator in a collar. It's by Peggy Warren of Wichita, a woman who (if her story is true) was preyed upon by a priest and treated with contempt by his bishop, while, because of the whole sordid mess, her marriage and sanity began to crumble around her. I'm not sharing her story to enter into a discussion on the fiduciary duty of priests and to examine how abuse can happen even between adults, when one of them is in a position of authority and the other is vulnerable. I'm sharing it because priests having affairs with married women is much more common than priests molesting children, and this flouting of marriage and the priesthood does an incredible amount of damage, despite the fact that bishops take it lightly.

Note that it's the ontological change, which is apparently viewed as a mere mask by the priest in the story - it's this ontological change or alteration of identity that allows the abusive relationship to happen. The priest was able to begin his long process of grooming, he had access to the wife, to the home, to the family in the way that he did because he was a priest. No unmarried guy off the street would have been given the opportunity this man was given. He was operating under cover, a convenient cover that works automatically in the minds of many people. "Father is a priest! He's a nice guy! Why would I worry that he spends time alone with my wife in my living room after I go to bed at night?"

This is a simple truth about human nature that we don't want to admit any more. We are so busy ourselves struggling to conform to what we ideally are meant to be - our idealistic identities- that we can't imagine someone using an idealized identity as a cover for doing wrong. Priests who molest children or who target vulnerable married parishioners are probably not struggling at all to be true to their vows. They are much more likely opportunists who see that the priesthood is a role that brings automatic trust and even a kind of adoration from people who would otherwise be very suspicious of them and who might see them for the scoundrels they are.

And yet ... and yet we must not become cynics.

Even on Peggy Warren's website, she acknowledges that "women are attracted to holiness". We give this kind of credit (this "taboo" as Freud would call it) to priests and to fathers and to leaders because we recognize a real thing. Our masks are not just things we hide behind or false fronts we adopt in order to fool others. They are the images of who we are ideally meant to be, of who in some sense we are becoming, of who in some sense we are. Good priests, true priests, are indeed loving and holy, good fathers are caring and wise, good leaders are brave and devoted to doing the right thing. This is true even in a world full of perverts in collars, absent dads who don't pay child support, and crooked politicians intent only on lining their own pockets.

We are called to be more than what we are, to be reborn as the true selves that we only imperfectly and occasionally manage to be.

And to be fair to the priest in question, it is a terrible temptation to find your rotten self suddenly trusted and revered simply because you wear a collar, or because you happen to be "daddy" or because you've been promoted, or because you have a knack for entertaining people. But if we give in to the shadowy whisper, we end up using these gifts of blind trust to our own sordid advantage - and the next thing you know we not only fail to meet our aspirations, on the contrary we find that we are far, far worse than we have ever known ourselves to be.

The Church is in no position to teach morality

Reading reports of the situation involving Fr Charles Fenech reminds me of the South American soap operas to which my late grandmother was addicted – ‘Quando Si Ama’, ‘Sentieri’, that sort of thing – only with an added dose of Miley Cyrus-style pornography that my late grandmother would certainly not have appreciated one tiny bit.

In fact, I sometimes wonder how people like her would react to the details now emerging from this case. My grandparents – all four of whom were nothing if not totally devoted to the Catholic Church – all passed away long before the first scandal rocked that institution to its foundations.

They were not around to see the aftermath of the Dar San Guzepp scandal, which resulted in two priests incarcerated in 2011 for abuse of minors. They also missed out on the divorce referendum in the same year, which – though unrelated to any particular scandal – graphically underscored a chasm that had opened up between their beloved Church and the rest of the population.

But surely there must still be people out there – many thousands, in fact – whose attitude towards the Church and all that it represents is identical to that of my grandparents’ entire generation. It was an attitude which regarded obedience to the Church as a virtue in itself, and which (as I discovered on the rare attempts I bothered trying) would brook absolutely no question of the same Church’s moral authority in all matters: be they spiritual or temporal.

And the Church profited much from their unquestioning obedience, too. It was the same attitude that resulted in a Constitution which simply pronounces ‘the religion of Malta’ to be ‘the Roman Catholic Apostolic religion’… leaving no room at all for a small but rapidly-growing non-Catholic population, who by the same token are made to feel ‘less Maltese’ than their Catholic peers.

More worryingly, the same Constitution also empowers the Church with the ‘right and duty’ to ‘teach which principles are right and which are wrong’ in Maltese society. Well, recent events have helped throw this Constitutional proviso into some kind of perspective. How can the Church retain a legal privilege to ‘teach right from wrong’… when there is no discernible morality of any kind in the same Church’s behaviour when faced with allegations of abuse (and smut) involving its own members?

I won’t comment on the allegations concerning Dominican Fr Fenech in themselves – these still need to be proven in a court of law – but there is much to be said about how these allegations were handled when first brought to the Church’s attention… EIGHT YEARS AGO.

Gozo Bishop Mario Grech, for instance, now tells us – but significantly, only now – that all such cases should be immediately referred to the police. The question arises as a matter of course: why, then, did the Church he represents not immediately refer the case to the police, when alerted to the Fenech allegations in 2006?

Auxiliary Bishop Mgr Charles Scicluna went one better. He claimed, live on TV, that he had no idea about this case at all, and only got to know about it through the media (i.e., last week). The Malta Independent went on to publish a letter, addressed to Mgr Scicluna in January 2013, in which the Response Team (more of which in a bit) informed him in no uncertain terms of what was going on. How are we to explain the discrepancy between what Scicluna said on TV, and what we now know actually happened?

But let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. (Hey, his Church already benefits from Constitutional privileges… one more ‘benefit’ can hardly hurt, can it?). The Curia now claims that Scicluna did know – because, let’s face it, they can’t exactly claim otherwise any more – but his ‘shock’ was directed at the fact that the Response Team had taken eight years without reaching a conclusion.

“Since the matter was being investigated by the Response Team, there could be no doubt that the Church authorities, including Bishop Scicluna, knew about the allegation, but they had to wait for the outcome of the Response Team investigation before taking any action.”

Again, it is significant that this admission comes only now, after the publication of that letter… and not, for instance, when identical claims were made in the same newspaper the preceding Saturday. But even if we accept that answer… the rest of the argument lies in tatters anyway.

They had to ‘wait for the outcome of the Response Team before taking any action’? What nonsense. The Response Team is a non-legally constituted, private tribunal that applies its own laws and procedures to any given case. Its ‘rulings’ – on the rare occasions when it actually reaches any – are not recognised at law; they are clearly no substitute for a State-administered justice procedure that is supposedly applicable to everyone equally.

The anomaly becomes all the more striking just by substituting the word ‘Church’ for any other institution of your choice. Let’s imagine the headmaster of a private school receives information that one of his teachers is sexually molesting students. It would be absurd – insulting, even – for the school to set up its own tribunal, and ‘try’ the teacher on its own turf without involving the authorities in any way.

Nobody would accept that from a school; nor, for that matter, from a bank or football club or NGO of any kind. Just imagine if this fictitious organisation also added: “Oh, and we chose not to involve the police because we wanted to settle the matter internally, using our own non-legal procedures, and couldn’t take any action until those procedures had run their course…”

Moreover, the Curia’s response also blatantly contradicts the Gozo Bishop’s earlier point about ‘immediately reporting all cases to the police’. But the most disturbing aspect is that all these reactions simply overlook the most damning circumstance of this case: Fr Fenech was allowed to remain in his position of public trust, despite allegations (by five different women) that he was abusing that position for his own sexual gratification.

Even acting on the principle of ‘innocent until proven guilty’, the standard procedure in all analogous cases would be to suspend him pending the outcome of the inquiry. Most self-respecting suspects would tender their resignation themselves, to prevent further harm to the institution.

Clearly, these diverse and contradictory reactions do not add up. What amazed me more, however, was the reaction by former Archbishop Paul Cremona to reports that he himself had offered one of the victims a sum of money to keep her trap shut.

Mgr Cremona has so far hotly denied the allegation that he attempted to bribe the victim of a crime – which would be a serious criminal offence, if committed by anyone who is not the Archbishop of a non-secular country – but he did not deny having been approached about the case, and therefore that he has known all about these allegations for years.

Chronology helps to put things into focus. The report to the Response Team was filed in 2006. Cremona became Archbishop two years later in 2008. He stepped down from that post around three weeks ago, after spending six years in the role. What did he do about the case in all this time? As I recall, he spent much of those six years lecturing the rest of us about morality and the ‘family values’.

Even before the divorce campaign – where he argued tirelessly about the ‘indissolubility of marriage’, even as Fr Fenech allegedly urged married women to leave their husbands and abandon their marital home – he had started his entire career with an unbridled attack on secularism. His inaugural homily on September 8, 2008 had even compared secularism – the separation of Church and State, please note – to Nazism and the threat of the Ottoman Turk in 1565.

Cremona separately argued that: “The stronger this ideology [secularism] becomes, the more difficult it will be for one to live his personal values. It will become more difficult for parents to pass on the values they believe in to their children...it will be more difficult for young people to make free choices when they are surrounded by wrong messages and influences.”

Those words must be haunting him now. What sort of ‘messages and influences’ are these ‘young people’ now getting from the country’s religious authorities? How are they any better than the ‘wrong message’ that Church and State should be kept separate, for the good of both Church and State?

But the smouldering question is another. It is perhaps reasonable to ask what Cremona’s motivation actually was at the time. ‘Separation of Church and State’ is certainly a threat… to the Church. It would inevitably whittle away its Constitutional role as moral torchbearer for the nation. It is in fact the absence of secularism in Malta that originally (the Original Sin, if you like) permitted the State to accord a ‘right and duty’ to the Church to meddle with the State’s own affairs.

This might explain why the former Archbishop dedicated so much energy to battling ‘secularism’ on all fronts, yet simultaneously took no action at all over a serious case of abuse involving a clergyman. It tells you everything you need to know about that institution’s moral compass.

From this perspective, one must also question the wisdom of retaining Constitutional privileges which bestow upon this institution a national monopoly over such concepts of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. We’ve all seen how the Church interprets ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ when applied to itself. I for one will certainly not take lessons in morality from an institution that wears and discards its own morals like an article of clothing… for external effect only.

extend it to its logical consequence. That is, we cannot accept that the

"Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone" is a tenet of your religion. It has absolutely no application in a civil society. Members of court do not routinely break basic tenets of justice. Police do not routinely break laws. Catholic Bishops do routinely cover up child molesting. All over the world. However, the police and judiciary are appointed by a democratically elected parliament, and subject to it - if they do not do their job, or aid and abet the very actions that they should be acting against, those at the helm can be censured or replaced, and if the government does not do this, it itself can be replaced (at least in principle). It happened Friday, when celestial faith was projected onto a mortal, a priest, who pleaded no contest to sexually molesting a 13-year-old girl – even as the priest's friends watched the proceedings in court.

The Rev. Uriel Ojeda, once the shining star of the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, was handcuffed and taken into custody after accepting a plea for forcing himself on a young girl. It was a cold legal conclusion to a tragedy of faith placed too fervently in one young man.

But his followers saw something else.

"Jesus Christ isn't the only one," Sylvia Chavez said before stopping mid-sentence and finishing her thought: "Jesus Christ was crucified while being innocent."

From the beginning, faith, denial and delusion were embodied in the charismatic Ojeda, who touched many hearts before breaking them – including mine.

On Friday, I had a close view of Ojeda's anguished face as the court rendered judgment on the 33-year-old cleric for whom many saw big, big things.

That was the problem.

Many placed their faith in Ojeda for reasons beyond the man himself.

He was supposed to be part of a new generation of priests that would move the Catholic Church beyond the scandal of sexual abuse.

His story was told many times in The Bee. His candor about how he felt temptation and worried that he might stumble made him human. But those words are haunting now.

He went to Spanish-speaking parishes and raised the faithful in ways they had never known.

Women flocked to him, to mother him and be near him. He played music and moved audiences of young Catholics to their feet in joy and ecstasy.

He was at the heart of a fatal shooting case in Woodland, serving as a mediator for the dead man's family, who believed Yolo County sheriff's deputies had unjustly murdered their son.

He always seemed to be at the heart of things. When my dad was dying, a friend brought Father Ojeda to my dad's side the night before he died.

So when the Diocese of Sacramento later moved Ojeda to a parish in Redding, I wrote a column criticizing the decision.

The Woodland faithful loved Ojeda and needed him, I wrote. I believed church leaders were too indifferent to Ojeda's flock and the role he played in mediating the controversy over the Woodland man's death.

I was deluded and in denial. One of the reasons priests are moved from church to church is to prevent parishioners from becoming too attached.

Feelings of worship are supposed to be reserved for one man, and he is not an earthly priest.

Scripture is full of examples of how we can become confused by our emotions, attachments and flaws.

We can become blind by our misplaced faith.

On Friday, authorities read the criminal charge against Ojeda in open court, how he crept into the bedroom of the girl when everyone else in her house was asleep.

How Ojeda slipped into her bed and put his hand down her pajama pants.

The judge asked Ojeda if he realized that his no contest plea would be viewed as a guilty plea in the eyes of the court.

Ojeda said he understood.

The judge asked Ojeda if he engaged in "substantial sexual conduct" with the girl. "I admit," Ojeda said.

The judge asked Ojeda if he realized that, after leaving prison, he would be a registered sex offender in California. Ojeda said he understood.

The judge asked Ojeda if he fully appreciated that by accepting the plea, he was waiving his right to a trial.

Ojeda said yes.

The case very likely would have gone to trial if Ojeda's lawyer, Jesse Ortiz, was able to quash statements that Ojeda made to diocese officials just before he was arrested in November 2011.

Ortiz is one of the best criminal defense lawyers in Sacramento, but he couldn't keep Ojeda's alleged admissions out of the evidence.

Once that was decided by Superior Court Judge Eugene L. Balonon, a plea deal was reached – one that will likely result in eight years in prison for the priest.

Losing at trial might have brought a 20-year prison sentence.

At 33, a man can still have a life after eight years in prison, but after 20? Clearly, Ojeda didn't want to risk going forward with his alleged admissions read to a jury.

On Friday, before Ojeda was handcuffed, one of his followers grasped a diocese spokesman, Kevin Eckery.

"Congratulations," she said over and over again, while holding Eckery in a manner that could only be described as unnerving.

"The only thing I can say is that everything has been carried out based on lies," Ana Bermudez said.

Sylvia Chavez, a buyer for a local grocery chain, said, "It was a plan.

"Bishop (Jaime Soto of the Sacramento Diocese) didn't want him there before he was ordained. And now he's been successful in getting him out."

Why would Soto do that?

"That's up to you guys to investigate," Chavez said.

With that, Ojeda's friends turned and walked away, believing what they needed to believe despite what they had seen and heard.

The Knights of Malta

Founded in around 1048 AD, the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta (also known as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta or the Knights of Malta) are a chivalrous order which: “…has maintained the values of chivalry and nobility”.[i] Following the end of the Knights Templar’s, Pope Clement V issued a Papal Bull known as Ad providam in 1312, which handed over the Templar’s assets to the Knights of Malta.

The Failure of the Sacraments

There’s an elephant quietly sitting in the nave that everyone on all sides of the clergy sex abuse crisis have been diligently ignoring, even the victims themselves. No clergy or even would-be reformers have really remarked on it yet, although it should be more obvious with each and every sad story. More importantly, it is a troubling issue that touches on the very heart and soul of Catholicism.

The monstrous truth is simply this: what the clergy sex abuse crisis clearly demonstrates is that the sacramental system has failed.

This is not just a case of hierarchical reneging of responsibility.There’s more to this than some bad apples. This is nothing that a few reforms can fix, some screening of seminarians or more pastoral responses by bishops. It is nothing less than a fundamental challenge to the entire Catholic Church, and it shows that the spiritual principles the whole structure is supposedly based on simply do not work.

Think about it. The offenders here are Roman Catholic priests, highly trained men. But unlike other professionals, these men are supposedly set apart and dedicated to lives of the spirit. They claim to have the power to forgive sins and make God appear.

They not only administer the sacraments to others, but also receive them themselves daily. That means, among other things, frequent confession to other priests. Moreover, many of these men belong to religious orders or are otherwise under close spiritual direction. They are supposed to confide everything to their confessors and superiors and to obey them unquestioningly.

So what went wrong? When an abusive priest goes to confession, does he start, “Bless me, father, for I have sinned: I buggered an altar boy three times this week”? And does the confessor tell him to say 3 Our Fathers and 4 Hail Marys and not to do it again?

According to their own theory, confessors have the power to forgive sins, but also to refuse to do so if sorrow is insufficient. Moreover, they are to appoint penances – if they wish, they can require satisfaction or significant signs of reform from the penitent before absolution. Some sins – such as solicitation for sex in the confessional – are even deemed so serious that only higher prelates, sometimes only the Pope or his appointed delegate can forgive them.

Yet the abusers continue to abuse. So are the sexually active priestslying to their confessors? This would mean that not only do the perpetrating priests remain in a state of mortal sin and are automatically excommunicated, they perform the sacraments in that state which is itself a grave sacrilege.

Or, even worse, are all the abusive priests linked? Do they only go to confession to like-minded perps who will understand? Is there then an organized network of sexually perpetrating priests, all busily enabling each other? This adds collusion and conspiracy to the sinand would indicate that the very structure itself is rotten to the core.

The evidence available suggests that perhaps both scenarios are true to varying degrees in different situations. Either way, however, the result is much the same.

The sacraments are meant to unite believers with Christ. Not just to remove the accumulations of sin like the weekly laundry, but togradually improve the recipient. They are intended to sanctify and uplift the faithful, increase devotion to God, charity to fellow humans, and moral stamina in the face of evil.

If the sacraments actually worked like this, wouldn’t we hear ennobling stories of clerical reform, of some molester inspired to truly repent and devote himself to the cause? But rather, the stories are depressingly the same, of priests caught time and again, transferred, treated, and now finally, laicized often against their will, with no regret or even acknowledgement of their evil.

What this means, each person must decide in their own conscience. But perhaps the fall off in confessions over the years itself tells the story. Why should anyone, lay or not, risk a ritual that seems so impotent in promoting reform and may, instead of granting grace, actually expose them to greater human wickedness?

It has been almost one full year since Pope Francis was elected to take Pope Benedict XVI’s place in the Vatican. He has been hailed by both the Catholic community and its critics for his openness to bringing much needed reform to the outdated ethos of the church. His forthcoming attitude has alleviated some concerns about how the Vatican can reconcile its beliefs with those of its more youthful and liberal followers. However, for all of his efforts to reconnect, Francis has failed to truly address the patterns of sexual abuse and exploitation by clerics supported by the Vatican.
In a recent interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Francis made comments defending the church’s response to reports of sexual abuse, claiming that it is “the only public institution to have acted with transparency and responsibility. No other has done more. And, the church is the only one to be attacked.” It is true that the church has been under scrutiny for quite some time — last month, a UN committee issued a report criticizing the Church’s policies on a range of issues, calling for the removal of any known sexual abusers and release of records of sexual assault allegations against clerics.

It is also true that he has publicly acknowledged the problem, and in December he created a committee to evaluate methods to protect sexually abused children and more effectively screen men seeking to become priests for sexual deviance. This committee, however, is strictly advisory, and there is almost no information available regarding how it has gone about measuring the breadth of the problem. The “transparency” Francis speaks of does not exist.

Support the Kurdish people's resistance against ISIS, Condemn US and Turkey for creating and using ISIS

We, the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS), salute the heroic resistance of the Kurdish people and their army in Rojava, the YPG/YPJ – People’s Protection Units – against the criminal gangs of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) in Kobane, one of the self-governing cantons of West Kurdistan (Rojava) in Syria.

We call on all the more than 300 ILPS member-organizations in 38 countries around the globe to take initiative and express their solidarity and support to the Kurdish people's resistance in Kobane and the whole of Rojava, or join the demonstrations being organized by the Kurdish liberation movement in different parts of the world.

The ILPS condemns the super-terrorist US for creating the ISIS monster that has rampaged through parts of Syria and Iraq, committing hideous crimes against the people in areas that they have overrun. We condemn Turkey for collaborating with the US in creating, arming and coddling this horde of terrorists.

ISIS and similar extremist Islamist terrorist groups like the Al Qaeda and Al-Nustra have been created by the US as part of its over-all scheme to remake the Middle-East, by carrying out regime change in such countries as Libya and Syria that have dared to assert their national sovereignty against imperialist plunder and war. For its part, the Turkish government is using ISIS to attack the Kurdish liberation struggle led by the PKK.

ISIS terrorists have been trained by US Special Forces in secret NATO bases inside Turkey and Jordan. For the last year and a half, the US has been developing what the world has now come to know as ISIS. Turkey has allowed safe passage through its borders of jihadists from different parts of the world to join ISIS, and has facilitated the transport of wounded ISIS terrorists to be treated in hospitals in the Turkish province of Urfa and other cities in Turkey.

The US is remaking the Middle-East in order to consolidate its hegemony in this oil-rich region. It is using the ISIS in the same manner as it has used Neo-Nazi gangs in the Ukraine to stir up trouble and force regime change, toppling the duly-elected president, and replacing him with a pro-Western president and a fascist military junta as part of US-NATO strategy to encircle and pressure Russia.

In the wake of the hideous crimes of the ISIS, including the massacre of Shiites and Christians, and the beheading of Western journalists, the US has pretended to adopt a policy of opposing ISIS and carrying out bombing raids against ISIS. In fact, the US is still thereby using the ISIS as the pretext to violate the national sovereignty of Syria.
The US war planes are actually bombing food granaries and buildings in Syria which are away from ISIS positions. They are now in a position to attack the forces of the Syrian government. Turkey has also exposed its real dirty agenda to attack the Kurdish liberation struggle by bombing PKK forces in Oramar (Daglica) near the border with Iraq, relieving ISIS from the successful counter-attacks of the Kurdish fighters and allowing the ISIS to block humanitarian aid from Iraqi Kurdistan.

The Kurdish resistance forces in Kobane have said that they can defeat the ISIS without any need for foreign intervention such as that falsely offered by the US and Turkey. All they need from Iraqi Kurdistan are sufficient weapons and ammunition against the tanks and vehicles mounted with big guns of the ISIS terrorists.

The terrible crimes being perpetrated by the ISIS and the support given them by the US and Turkey have aroused the anger of freedom-loving people throughout the world. At the same time, the heroic resistance of the YPG/YPJ – the People’s Protection Units – composed of Kurdish men and women, has inspired the people of the world to rally in support of the Kurdish liberation struggle.

The acknowledged leader of the Kurdish liberation struggle, Abdullah Ocalan, has called on the entire Kurdish nation to mobilize in support of the resistance in Kobane. Kurds throughout the world have responded by organizing demonstrations in many countries calling for international support.

We must show our solidarity to the Kurdish people in their hour of need and give them all-out support until victory.

A History of Guatemala’s Syphilis Experiment: How a U.S. Led Team Performed Human Experimentations in Central America

Dr. Cyril Broderick, A Liberian scientist and a former professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Liberia’s College of Agriculture and Forestry says the West, particularly the U.S. is responsible for the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Dr. Broderick claims the following in an exclusive article published in the Daily Observer based in Monrovia, Liberia. He wrote the following:

The US Department of Defense (DoD) is funding Ebola trials on humans, trials which started just weeks before the Ebola outbreak in Guinea and Sierra Leone. The reports continue and state that the DoD gave a contract worth $140 million dollars to Tekmira, a Canadian pharmaceutical company, to conduct Ebola research. This research work involved injecting and infusing healthy humans with the deadly Ebola virus. Hence, the DoD is listed as a collaborator in a “First in Human” Ebola clinical trial (NCT02041715, which started in January 2014 shortly before an Ebola epidemic was declared in West Africa in March.

Is it possible that the United States Department of Defense (DOD) and other Western countries are directly responsible for infecting Africans with the Ebola virus? Dr. Broderick claims that the U.S. government has a research laboratory located in a town called Kenema in Sierra Leone that studies what he calls “viral fever bioterrorism”, It is also the town where he acknowledges that is the “epicentre of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.” Is it a fact? Is Dr. Broderick a conspiracy theorist? He says that “there is urgent need for affirmative action in protecting the less affluent of poorer countries, especially African citizens, whose countries are not as scientifically and industrially endowed as the United States and most Western countries, sources of most viral or bacterial GMOs that are strategically designed as biological weapons.” He also asks an important question when he says “It is most disturbing that the U. S. Government has been operating a viral hemorrhagic fever bioterrorism research laboratory in Sierra Leone. Are there others?”

Well, Mr. Broderick’s claims seem to be true. After all, the U.S. government has been experimenting with deadly diseases on human beings for a long time, history tells us so. One example is Guatemala. Between 1946 and 1948, the United States government under President Harry S. Truman in collaboration with Guatemalan President Juan José Arévalo and his health officials deliberately infected more than 1500 soldiers, prostitutes, prisoners and even mental patients with syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chancroid (a bacterial sexual infection) out of more than 5500 Guatemalan people who participated in the experiments. The worst part of it is that none of the test subjects infected with the diseases ever gave informed consent. The Boston Globe published the discovery made by Medical historian and professor at Wellesley College, Susan M. Reverby in 2010 called ‘Wellesley professor unearths a horror: Syphilis experiments in Guatemala.’ It stated how she came across her discovery:

Picking through musty files in a Pennsylvania archive, a Wellesley College professor made a heart-stopping discovery: US government scientists in the 1940s deliberately infected hundreds of Guatemalans with syphilis and gonorrhea in experiments conducted without the subjects’ permission. Medical historian Susan M. Reverby happened upon the documents four or five years ago while researching the infamous Tuskegee syphilis study and later shared her findings with US government officials.

The unethical research was not publicly disclosed until yesterday, when President Obama and two Cabinet secretaries apologized to Guatemala’s government and people and pledged to never repeat the mistakes of the past — an era when it was not uncommon for doctors to experiment on patients without their consent.

After Reverby’s discovery, the Obama administration apparently gave an apology to then-President Alvaro Colom according to the Boston Globe:

Yesterday, Obama called President Álvaro Colom Caballeros of Guatemala to apologize, and Obama’s spokesman told reporters the experiment was “tragic, and the United States by all means apologizes to all those who were impacted by this.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton had called Colom Thursday night to break the news to him. In her conversation with the Guatemalan president, Clinton expressed “her personal outrage and deep regret that such reprehensible research could occur,’’ said Arturo Valenzuela, assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs.

The study in Guatemala was led by John Cutler, a US health service physician who also took part in the controversial Tuskegee Syphilis experiments which began in the 1930’s. Researchers wanted to study the effects of a group of antibiotics called penicillin on affected individuals. The prevention and treatment of syphilis and other venereal diseases were also included in the experimentation. Although they were treated with antibiotics, more than 83 people had died according to BBC news in 2011 following a statement issued by Dr Amy Gutmann, head of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues:

The Commission said some 5,500 Guatemalans were involved in all the research that took place between 1946 and 1948. Of these, some 1,300 were deliberately infected with syphilis, gonorrhoea or another sexually transmitted disease, chancroid. And of that group only about 700 received some sort of treatment. According to documents the commission had studied, at least 83 of the 5,500 subjects had died by the end of 1953.

Washington’s reaction to the report is a farce. The apology made to Guatemala’s government was for the sake of public relations. Washington knows about its human experimentations in the past with deadly diseases conducted by government-funded laboratories that are known to be harmful to the public. The U.S. government is guilty in conducting numerous medical experiments on people not only in Guatemala but in other countries and on its own territory. As the Boston Globe report mentioned, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study occurred between 1932 and 1972 by the U.S. Public Health Service to study the “natural progression” of untreated syphilis in the African American population. The U.S. Public Health Service and the Tuskegee Institute collaborated in 1932 and enrolled 600 poor sharecroppers from Macon County, Alabama to study the syphilis infection. However, it was documented that at least 400 of those had the disease (they were never informed that they actually had syphilis) while the remaining 200 did not. They received free medical care, food and even free burial insurance for participating in the study. Documents revealed that they were told that they had “bad blood” which meant that they had various medical conditions besides syphilis. The Tuskegee scientists continued to study the participants without treating their illnesses and they also withheld much-needed information from the participants about penicillin, which proved to be effective in treating Syphilis and other venereal diseases. The test subjects were under the impression that they were receiving free health care from the U.S. government while they were deliberately being lied to by the same administrators who were conducting the tests. Washington is fully aware of its human experimentations with deadly diseases. The government of Guatemala also knew about the Syphilis experiments according to the Boston Globe:

A representative of the Guatemalan government said his nation will investigate, too — looking in part at the culpability of officials in that country. The records of the experiment suggest that Guatemalan government officials were fully aware of the tests, sanctioned them, and may have done so in exchange for stockpiles of penicillin.

However, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services published the study ‘Fact Sheet on the 1946-1948 U.S. Public Health Service Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Inoculation Study’ and was forced to admit what happened in Guatemala during the syphilis experiments:

While conducting historical research on the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis, Professor Susan Reverby of Wellesley College recently discovered the archived papers of the late Dr. John Cutler, a U.S. Public Health Service medical officer and a Tuskegee investigator. The papers described another unethical study supported by the U.S. government in which highly vulnerable populations in Guatemala were intentionally infected with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The study, conducted between 1946 and 1948, was done with the knowledge of Dr. Cutler’s superiors and was funded by a grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health to the Pan American Sanitary Bureau (which became the Pan American Health Organization) to several Guatemalan government ministries. The study had never been published.

The U.S. government admitted to its wrongdoing, 62 years too late. What Dr. Broderick wrote is not conspiratorial in any sense. The U.S. government has been involved in bioterrorism; Guatemala is a case in point. Dr. Broderick summarized what average people can do to prevent governments, especially those from the West from creating and exposing populations from diseases they experiment with in laboratories:

The challenge is global, and we request assistance from everywhere, including China, Japan, Australia, India, Germany, Italy, and even kind-hearted people in the U.S., France, the U.K., Russia, Korea, Saudi Arabia, and anywhere else whose desire is to help. The situation is bleaker than we on the outside can imagine, and we must provide assistance however we can. To ensure a future that has less of this kind of drama, it is important that we now demand that our leaders and governments be honest, transparent, fair, and productively engaged. They must answer to the people. Please stand up to stop Ebola testing and the spread of this dastardly disease.

After Guatemala’s ordeal with the U.S. government who deliberately infected people with syphilis, West African nations should be extremely skeptical about the U.S. government’s actions combating Ebola. Professor Francis Boyle of the University of Illinois, College of Law questions the Obama administration’s actions in West Africa. RIA Novosti recently interviewed Boyle and he said the following:

US government agencies have a long history of carrying out allegedly defensive biological warfare research at labs in Liberia and Sierra Leone. This includes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is now the point agency for managing the Ebola spill-over into the US,” Prof. Francis Boyle said.

Why has the Obama administration dispatched troops to Liberia when they have no training to provide medical treatment to dying Africans? How did Zaire/Ebola get to West Africa from about 3,500km away from where it was first identified in 1976?”

That’s a good question for Washington, but would the public get any answers? Not anytime soon, since it took more than 62 years for the Guatemala syphilis experiments to be exposed to the public, not by the US government, by a medical historian.
