In nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent, I covered stories of mass graves in far-flung locations in Eastern Europe and Russia. The thought of them has remained lodged in my memory.

But never did I expect to be covering a mass grave from modern times on my own doorstep; I thought Western and Northern Europe was immune from such horrors.

Yet that is exactly what I came across in January this year in the small Irish town of Tuam in County Galway, an ugly place with its rundown streets and council estates.

On a grey, rainy afternoon, I was taken to a patch of land in the centre of one such estate. Surrounded by houses built in the 1970s, on the edge of a scruffy playground, I found a plaster statue of the Madonna on a pile of stones, incongruously sheltered by an old enamel bathtub. Beneath it were the bodies of nearly 800 babies.

The remains of a forbidding 8ft wall nearby were a clue to the place's history. Until 1961 this had been the site of a Catholic religious community run by the Sisters of Bon Secours.

They had bought the workhouse in the 1920s and converted it into a home for unmarried mothers. For the next 36 years, the nuns took in thousands of women. In those days, sex outside marriage was proclaimed a mortal sin.

The Church said the girls were 'fallen women' and degenerates. Their crime had to be hidden, their babies delivered in secret behind high walls, and their children taken away.

News of the mass graves at Tuam finally made the newspapers last week, but I had heard of the site and visited the shrine five months ago while researching a BBC TV documentary about the estimated 60,000 babies that the Church took for adoption in the 1950s and 1960s, many of them sent to America in return for large payments disguised as 'donations'.

I had written about one such case in my book Philomena, later made into a film starring Judi Dench.

The hundreds of letters I received from mothers and children forcibly separated by the nuns, and still seeking each other even now, made me painfully aware of the full human tragedy behind Ireland's mother and baby homes. But Tuam had other, even darker secrets.

I talked to local residents and met John, now in his 80s and one of the first to move into the estate in October 1972, who told me how children made a grim discovery on the grassy area. He said: 'Not too long after we came here they were playing football and they saw something they thought was a ball or something. They kicked it around, but when we looked at it we saw it was a child's skull.'

Worse was to follow. 'The local lads used to go fishing in the river', John said. 'They needed to dig for worms and one day they lifted up some old slabs that had been lying since before the estate was built...'

What the boys found was horrific. The slabs concealed the entrance to a Victorian septic tank built for the workhouse. Its original function had ceased in the 1930s when mains sewerage came, but the nuns had seemingly put it to a new and grisly use.

'We children burst open the slab...the tank was full of skeletons'

Barry Sweeney, one of the boys there that day, says: 'It was a concrete slab, but there was something hollow underneath it, so we decided to bust it open and it was full to the brim with skeletons. The priest came over and blessed it. I had nightmares over it.'

Like all the mother and baby homes run by the Church, conditions in Tuam had been primitive. The girls were denied basic medical care and refused painkillers for even the most difficult birth because the pain was 'God's punishment for your sin'.

Their babies were neglected, crowded into communal nurseries where infection and disease ran unchecked. The result was a shamefully high death rate, with measles and dysentery killing hundreds.

Infant mortality was often five or six times worse in the Church's homes than in the rest of Ireland, and judging by accounts of what went on there it is hardly surprising.

'Nellie', a former inmate in Tuam, spoke to me on condition that I would not use her real name.

'I came in pregnant and was put to work in the nursery,' she said. 'It was awful. There was no medicine and the babies were always getting sick. When one of them caught something, they would all get it and nuns did nothing about it. The worst was the green diarrhoea. It just poured out of the little things. It was so bad that you couldn't even put nappies on them. They just lay there in it.'

Nellie's daughter survived, but many didn't. 'There was nothing you could do. Their diet was terrible, there was overcrowding and disease, and no doctor to call on. There were babies dying every day.' The Tuam home was demolished in 1972 and the nuns departed without any mention of the dead babies.

But rumours continued to circulate until two local people, Catherine Corless and Teresa Kelly, set out to uncover the truth. 'We all knew about the "home babies”,' Catherine told me. 'But the place was behind 8ft walls and nobody was allowed in.'

Catherine and Teresa consulted old maps and documents, gathering whatever information they could. The stories about the sewage tank began to make sense. 'Some locals do remember,' she told me, 'that grave diggers would be seen late at night bringing out children and putting them in there. They were without coffins, just wrapped in white shrouds.'

Catherine went to the records office in Galway. 'There was a nice girl there. I'm not sure she was supposed to, but she dug out the old records of all the children who died, with their ages and what they died of...'

By collating the data, Catherine calculated that nearly 800 babies were buried beneath the housing estate. 'I was utterly amazed when I realised that I had the names of 796 babies. The causes of death were measles or septicaemia, abscesses, convulsions, tuberculosis or pneumonia; lots were aged three to six months, and then quite a lot of one and two-year-olds. It's heart-breaking reading through all the names.'

An inspection report from 1944 reveals the sorry state of many of the 333 babies then at Tuam.

Most, aged between three weeks and 13 months, are described as 'fragile, pot-bellied and emaciated', 31 are listed as 'poor babies, emaciated and not thriving'. There is a 'miserable,

emaciated child with voracious appetite and no control over bodily functions'; a 'delicate' ten-month-old 'child of itinerants', and a five-year-old with its 'hands growing near its shoulders'.

A nine-month-old is described as 'emaciated with flesh hanging loosely on limbs', and the child's mother is said to be 'not normal'.

The report concludes that the mortality rate was 'high', with 300 deaths between 1943 and 1946. With so many babies perishing, the nuns had used the septic tank as a convenient depository, turning it into a mass grave. Catherine Corless believes that what is now the playground also conceals buried remains.

A Church that sets such store by the sanctity of human life and its opposition to abortion showed very little respect for the young souls in its care, and that rankles with Teresa Kelly.

'The nuns left without doing justice to those children', she says. 'They walked away and left the babies there. I don't understand how anyone could just cover over all that and forget that all that happened.'

When the story of the grave began to emerge, a local couple took it on themselves to keep the burial site tidy; it was they who put up the makeshift shrine with its bathtub. But Teresa says she won't rest until a proper memorial is erected. 'We want to put those children's names on a plaque and get them up on the wall. They deserve to have a name, the day they were born, the day they died. Their mothers don't know where they're buried. People will be looking; they deserve to know.'

Now people are looking. A relative of a child born in Tuam has made a formal complaint to the Irish police that could trigger exhumations at the site. William Joseph Dolan was born on May 21, 1950, to a young single mother called Bridget Dolan. The institution's records carry the scribbled word 'died', but no further information. Bridget reportedly told her family that William had been sent for adoption in America. His relative, who does not wish to be identified, says: 'I just want to know what happened to him. There is no death certificate. He could still be alive or he's in the grave.'

Pressure is growing for a proper investigation. The Irish Minister for Children, Charlie Flanagan, has called the revelations about Tuam and other mother and baby homes 'deeply disturbing' and 'a shocking reminder of a darker past'.

The Dolan case may force the government to take action, but it is unlikely Tuam is an isolated case.

Catherine Corless says: 'I know there are other mass graves and there are people wanting to recognise them. There are mass graves all over Ireland. Unrecognised, unnamed children. Here in Tuam we hope to have some justice for them.'

Sadly, from my own experience working on Philomena, I know justice is not easy to come by.

'As the diocese did not have any involvement in running the home, we do not have any material relating to it. There exists a clear moral imperative on the Bon Secours Sisters to act upon their responsibilities.'

But when Catherine Corless approached the Sisters, they told her: 'We haven't got one single record. We gave everything over to the county council and then it went to the health board, so we have absolutely nothing on the home.'

When I phoned a spokesman for the Bon Secours Sisters, she was charming, but said that the nuns were old now; they aren't able to talk to the media and there is really nothing they can do.

'Through the passage of time, the sisters who would have served at the home are now deceased. Unfortunately, I cannot take the matter any further.'

It is a statement that puts me in mind of the final scene of the film Philomena when Steve Coogan, playing a semi-fictional version of me and furious at being fobbed off by the Church, storms into a convent and threatens to throw the old nun who ran the mother and baby home 'out of that f***ing wheelchair!' Melodramatic perhaps, but sometimes that's what it takes.

Author battled clergy to gain first-hand experience of mother-and-baby homes

THE year was 1955 and the nun was speaking to Dr Halliday Sutherland, a Scottish doctor, author and TB treatment pioneer who visited both the Tuam home run by the French sisters, and the infamous Magdalene Laundry in Galway City as he was researching his book, Irish Journey.

To gain access to the Magdalene Laundry, Dr Sutherland had to accept interrogation by the fearsome Bishop of Galway, Michael John Browne – one of the most senior Catholic clerics and a noted supporter of the notorious sectarian boycott of Protestants in Fethard-on-Sea.

Dr Sutherland's original 1955 manuscript kept by his grandson Mark (hallidaysutherland.com) is a remarkable contemporary account of what he found at the Tuam mother-and-child home 59 years ago.

He wrote: "At Tuam I went to the old workhouse, now the Children's Home, a long two-storied building in its own grounds. These were well-kept and had many flowerbeds. The home is run by the Sisters of Bon Secours of Paris and the Reverend Mother showed me round. Each of the sisters is a fully trained nurse and midwife. Some are also trained children's nurses. An unmarried girl may come here to have her baby. She agrees to stay in the home for one year.

During this time she looks after her baby and assists the nuns in domestic work. She is unpaid.

"At the end of a year she may leave. She may take her baby with her or leave the baby at the home in the hope that it will be adopted. The nuns keep the child until the age of seven, when it is sent to an Industrial School. There were 51 confinements in 1954 and the nuns had now 120 children. For each child or mother in the home, the County Council pays £1 per week. That is a pittance.

"If a girl has two confinements at the home she is sent at the end of the year to the Magdalen (sic) Home Laundry at Galway. Children of five and over attend the local school. All the babies were in cots and the Reverend Mother said: 'We wouldn't allow a girl to take her baby to bed with her unless it was at least two months old. Then she is probably fond of it. Before then there might be accidents.''' Dr Sutherland also wrote a harrowing account of being mobbed by "a score of the younger children" at the home, in the hope he might adopt and give them a family home.

"The whole building was fresh and clean. In the garden at the back of the House, children were singing. I walked along the path and was mobbed by over a score of the younger children. They said nothing but each struggled to shake my hand. Their hands were clean and cool. Then I realised that to these children I was a potential adopter who might take some boy or girl away to a real home. It was pathetic. Finally I said: 'Children, I'm not holding a reception.' They stopped struggling and looked at me. Then a nun told them to stand on the lawn and sing me a song in Irish. This they did very sweetly. At the Dogs Home, Battersea, every dog barks at the visitors in the hope that it will be taken away."

Dr Sutherland later met Bishop Browne and made a contemporaneous note of the often hostile exchanges as he tried to get permission to visit the Magdalene Laundry.

Bishop Browne: "Why do you want to see the Magdalene Home?"

Dr Sutherland: "I want to see how you treat unmarried mothers. Many of these girls come to England. It is said that 55 per cent of the girls in British Catholic Rescue Homes are Irish."

Bishop: "That is propaganda. Fr Craven began it. Cardinal Bourne repeated it. For 25 years I have asked for the figures. They can't give them. Do you know the figures?"

Sutherland: "No, I'm trying to get them."

Bishop: "You will find there are only a few. Hundreds of decent Irish girls are going to England. At this moment your government are advertising high salaries for Irish girls to go to England as nurses in your mental hospitals."

Sutherland: "English priests say that most of the Irish lose their faith within six months of coming to England."

Bishop: "Then why don't your English priests look after the Irish instead of throwing bastards in our face!"

Sutherland: "My Lord, no-one is throwing bastards in your face. Ireland is a Christian country where going to Mass is a social duty difficult to avoid."

Bishop: "That is normal. It should be so in England."

Investigation into child vaccine trial halted in 2004

The investigation into a vaccine trial on children in mother and baby homes, which politicians and Catholic Church leaders are now calling for, has previously been dealt with by the High Court, which declared one invalid in June 2004.
The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, yesterday called for a properly constituted commission to examine issues raised by the discovery of mass baby deaths at St Mary’s mother and baby home in Tuam, Co Galway – including allegations that medical trials were carried out on children.
The 2004 court ruling followed a challenge to a government order directing an investigation into such vaccine trials, under the aegis of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse. The challenge was brought by retired UCD professor of microbiology Irene Hillary.
Professional reputation
Prof Hillary had expressed concern about the implications for her professional reputation of the establishment of an inquiry into the vaccination trials under the aegis of a commission set up to inquire into the issue of child abuse.
Previously, in July 2003, a unanimous judgment by the Supreme Court upheld an appeal by the late UCD professor Patrick Meenan against a High Court decision which had directed him to give evidence before the vaccine trials division of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse.

Born in Irish ‘Home’ of where hundreds of babies’ bodies may have been discarded, American recalls its evil

Peter Ferris Cochran is a tall, tanned North Carolina man who likes his blazers colorful, his trucks big and, if conditions are to his liking, his head shielded by a baseball hat. He speaks in a slow drawl that immediately identifies him as a Southerner, and once owned a successful business called Cochran & Associates in the North Carolina beach town of Emerald Isle.
Nothing about Cochran would alert those around him of the unusual circumstances under which he came into this world. That his name was once Andrew Michael Gallagher. That, by birth, he’s not a Southerner or even an American. That he’s Irish, born in 1957 in the now-infamous Tuam center for unwed mothers in western Ireland, where the remains of nearly 800 babies–796 according to one historian’s estimates– may have been discarded in a massive septic tank. The full extent of what happened is now the subject of investigation, with authorities using ground sensor equipment to explore the tank.
“This was the information I’ve grown with over the last 50 years, and of every bit I knew was that this was a very evil orphanage,” he said Sunday afternoon in a phone interview. “It was evil for the orphans and it was evil for the unwed mothers. My mother was persecuted for out-of-wedlock sex, and the Catholic Church was just adamant about celibacy before marriage.”

On the day that the papal nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Charles Brown, told the US-based Catholic News Service that he saw “that Irish Catholicism had entered a new springtime,” representatives of the Association of Catholic Priests (ACP) were trying to convince a group of Irish bishops that the Irish Catholic Church was facing, among other things, a vocational crisis of enormous magnitude.
Archbishop Brown said that young Irish seminarians he met at St Patrick’s College, the national seminary in Maynooth, and in Rome, showed a “renewed enthusiasm for their faith”. That may well be true, but the numbers are miniscule.
Figures on the bishops’ own website show the age profile of Irish priests. Over 65 per cent of Irish priests are aged 55 or over. There are only two priests under the age of 40 in the Archdiocese of Dublin. A priest in Killala diocese, Fr Brendan Hoban, pointed out that there has been a priest and celebration of the Eucharist in his parish –Moygownagh – since the eighth century. But he believes he will be that last priest in that parish. At the moment there is a priest in every parish in Killala. Within 20 years there will be seven serving 22 parishes spread out over a wide area. The situation is much same in other dioceses.

Quinn says some reporting on Tuam story gave ‘mistaken impression’

Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn has backed calls for the establishment of an independent inquiry into mother and baby homes, saying it was important to find out the facts while also considering the context of the time.
Mr Quinn said he “broadly” supported comments made yesterday by Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin, who said it was important that any investigation was independent and separate from the Catholic Church, the State or any other organisation involved in the homes.
Dr Martin said such a commission should “perhaps be headed by a judicial personality” and he said he would like to see Ian Elliott, a child safeguarding expert, involved.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who, upon seeing the dramatic splash screaming “800 BABIES” in the Irish Daily Mail, stared at it incredulously. It took days for it to sink in, as I tried to find out more. I think it’s a version of this personal process that unfolded as a collective, national one.
Journalists who stuttered on this “story” will contextualise it on a news agenda that was coming out the other side of a rollicking election, and the implosion of the Labour Party leadership. The news came from an unfamiliar source, a local historian compiling research. The initial break came in a local newspaper, not a blockbuster Prime Time or an Irish Times front page.
It all happened so long ago. The facts were scant. They were allegations. Tread softly, I’d imagine news editors thought, because this seems so big – surely we would have known about it before? We still don’t know all of the facts, but we know the context. We all know by osmosis the horrors committed in this State. It’s oral history. We all heard our parents talk about dodgy priests, creepy buildings at the top of the town and babies not deserving of burial in consecrated ground, its soil fertilised with hypocrisy.

The obsession with Ireland’s dark past has officially become unhinged.

For proof of the maxim that ‘A lie will go round the world while truth is pulling its boots on’, look no further than the Tuam 800 dead babies story. Courtesy of a modern media that seems more interested in titillating readers with gorno than giving us cool facts, and thanks to a Twittermob constantly on the hunt for things it might feel ostentatiously outraged by, the story about babies being dumped in an old, out-of-use septic tank by nuns at a home for ‘fallen women’ in Tuam in Galway made waves in every corner of the globe. Then, a few days later, having finally strapped its boots on, the truth - or at least a more sober analysis of what might have really happened in Tuam - staggered on to the stage. And it was a very different story to the fact-lite, fury-heavy tale that had already gone round the world.
The speed with which the work of one local researcher in Tuam became a global story was amazing. Catherine Corless has been looking into the Mother and Baby Home run by nuns in Tuam for years. The home, which was active between 1925 and 1961, took in single women who were pregnant, which was considered a terribly sinful state to be in in early to mid-twentieth century Ireland. Corless discovered two things during her research: first, that between 1925 and 1961, the deaths of 796 children were registered by the nuns who ran the Tuam home; and secondly that in 1975 two boys in Tuam discovered an old septic tank on the grounds of the then-closed home, smashed through the concrete covering and saw skeletal remains inside. A fairly vague posting about these findings was put on to a Facebook page, and then all hell broke loose.

Galway mass baby grave: All homes for unwed mothers to be part of inquiry

The Irish government will include all major mother-and-baby homes in an independent inquiry commission after the dramatic intervention of the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin.
Dr Martin said that only an independent inquiry led by a senior judicial figure could now provide the answers required from Ireland's escalating mother-and-baby home scandal.
The move will be confirmed once gardai have concluded preliminary investigations into claims that 796 babies were buried in a septic tank near the Tuam, Co Galway, home, which was run by the Bon Secours nuns.
Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald has appointed two senior gardai and they will immediately begin work examining the Tuam mass grave claims.
A government source said last night that any wide-ranging commission of inquiry cannot interfere with garda investigations.

Once again, Ireland is being forced to face up to another element of our dark and shameful past.
The discovery of hundreds of children buried in a septic tank on the site of a former “mother and baby home” in Tuam has served as a horrifying reminder of the abuse Irish women and children were subjected to for decades.
Women who were stigmatised and forced into institutions just because they became pregnant outside of marriage.
Children who were branded “illegitimate” from birth, treated as second-class citizens, and forced to live in conditions that put their health and lives at risk.
As the discovery of the mass grave in Tuam has so starkly reminded us, thousands of children died in these homes.

Like millions across the world our hearts ache for the families who have suffered and are suffering because of the stunning callousness and deceit by Catholic officials who ran the now infamous Tuam center for unwed mothers. We simply can’t imagine the horrors they have endured and the lifelong trauma that suffering has caused.

The horror at Tuam will be dealt with adequately, we believe, only if the women who suffered there can overcome their grief enough to band together and seek justice. We hope they will do so.

History shows that healing, justice and truth-telling happens best when those who are hurt move beyond their pain and shame and organize.

As Frederick Douglass once said, “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”

We beg the women whose babies and toddlers were taken from them at Tuam to first and foremost take good care of themselves, by sharing their pain with others they love and trust, and by seeking professional help from independent sources.

But we also beg them to reach out to one another, and to independent sources of help, and use their voices to advocate for themselves and other mothers who have been exploited by Catholic officials.

Then, we call on every single Irish priest to reach out to as many of the moms of these horrible homes and beg them to share their stories, get help and start healing.

Forscherin: "Solche Gräber gibt es in ganz Irland"

“You would not talk to them,” the locals told me in Tuam near Galway City this weekend, “they were outcasts.”

They were speaking to IrishCentral about the mothers and babies secreted away to The Home, an 1840’s institution run by the Bon Secours sisters in the town from 1925 to 1961, but this week locals insisted that more and more people want to remember them now.

One of them is Paul Kanahan, 46. Yesterday he took the long drive to Tuam from his home in County Sligo to visit the site that in the last fortnight has become one of the most controversial in the world.

Inspired by news reports, Kanahan told IrishCentral he made the trip to the unmarked grave site to pay his respects to the Home Babies and reflect on his own experience as a Home Baby from another notorious mother and baby home called Castlepollard in County Westmeath.

An adoptee and now a father himself, Kanahan found his birth mother and sister in 2010 through a series of lucky breaks and with the health of a priest and a Facebook page for adoptees from the Castlepollard Mothers and Babies home.

Merely human waste to be disposed of

We need to know why the death rate among 'illegitimate' children was so high, writes Gene Kerrigan

How come hundreds of children died in the care of a Catholic Church institution in Tuam? And how come some – if not all – of them were disposed of like spoiled fruit? Dumped beside a septic tank. Why did it happen?

What do we know about this country that might explain how such a thing could happen?

And let's leave aside the unbearable thought that there were more – many more – children, in other locations, who had similarly short lives and who were disposed of with similar lack of human dignity.

It didn't just happen. It wasn't just bad management. It took years of organisation, strategies of intimidation and control. And, let's face it, it took a citizenry steeped in fear and reverence.

A population that was deferential. People who did what they were told. People who didn't dare ask questions.

Not, of course, that dumping the bodies of almost 800 kids near a septic tank was the object of the exercise – that was just a byproduct. Just some human waste that had to be tucked away in a suitable place.

It was about sex and power. It was about the right of the Church to do whatever it thought necessary to preserve its domain. It stemmed from a hierarchy of old men who were obsessed with sex.

'We can offer a better class of baby with a good background': The 1961 letter from nuns to adoptive parents

One woman who knows the truth of how nuns in Ireland of the late 1950s handled the children entrusted to their care is Mary Lawlor, who was adopted out by the nuns at Sean Ross Abbey, Co. Tipperary.

Letters she obtained from her adoptive parents detailing how she was given to them also sheds light on the nuns' attitudes towards children of poorer single mothers.

The nuns cautioned the prospective parents not to pick a child of the ‘wrong class’, and to take a young child as ‘the better class girl has to leave here quickly so as not to be detected in her sorrow’.

In a letter dated July 26, 1961, sent to the adoptive parents of Mary Lawlor, the sister in charge of the Roscrea institution reads:

'We had a wonderful reference from your priest and we think you should take a baby over six months… the baby will be brought up just as you would bring your own child up and a child of two years has been too long in an institution to fall easy into your ways. We have a very nice little girl Mary Margaret who is of good background and very intelligent,’ the nun wrote.

Speaking to the Irish Mail on Sunday, Mary Lawlor said the nuns also gave her adoptive parents a book detailing how to look after a baby.

'They were picking and choosing babies, so the older ones – who would have needed a bit more
support – ended up being left there because the nuns were putting people off them.

Young mums denied painkillers to make them 'suffer for their sins'

THEY were made to scrub the hard, cold floors on their knees with a toothbrush, and to cut the huge lawns with only a scissors.

Mothers at the Bessborough mother-and-baby home in Co Cork, privately referred to as "a secret penitential jail", were refused all social contact with the outside world, and not allowed to even speak with each other.

Former inmates believe up to 3,000 children are buried in unmarked graves at the country's largest mother and baby home.

John Barrett, who was born at Bessborough on July 17, 1952, told the Sunday Independent: "If there are 800 babies buried in a single plot in Tuam, I can guarantee you that there are thousands buried at Bessborough. I would estimate from my information that there are probably between 2,000 and 3,000 children buried there."

The infant mortality rate at Bessborough in the late Forties was 55 per cent – meaning burials would have been taking place on a weekly basis.

The young women were routinely forbidden from attending the funerals of their babies and, in one case, a woman who lost her baby received nothing more than a pair of his shoes as she was sent home.

Shocking claim after woman's 35-year search to find her infant cousin’s burial place

Every household in Ireland could be rocked by the forgotten babies inquiry, a mum-of-two warned last night.

Mary Frances Joyce, who has been trying to find the grave of her infant cousin for more than three decades, said: “Ireland needs to get its head out of the sand because tens of thousands of women were sent to mother-and-baby institutions and had children there.

“I don’t think there is a family in this country that hasn’t got a dark secret hanging over them somewhere.”

Mary’s cousin was born at Castlepollard, Co Westmeath, one of the largest mother-and-baby homes in the country on October 4, 1950.

She died just over two months later but there is no burial record for her.

There was a time in rural Ireland when the amount of money donated by individuals and families to various Catholic Church collections was read out from the altar by the local priest at Sunday Mass.

As the priest intoned his way through the names, listing whether they gave five shillings, 10 shillings, one pound, or even the odd five pounds, it was a public affirmation of where people were placed in the social hierarchy. Those financially better off were obviously near the top of the contributions list, those doing not too badly in the middle, and the really hard done by somewhere near the bottom.

So when it came to monies for Christmas or Easter Dues, or whatever the awesome power of unquestioned Irish Catholicism expected at the time, everybody knew and accepted their place. This was determined by their economic circumstances. And it would be unmarried mothers from the five shillings – or less – contributions figure, who would most likely end up in places like the converted Famine workhouse run by the nuns in Tuam, now at the centre of international controversy.

Those who want to get their heads round the fact that the bodies of nearly 800 babies and young children were seemingly disposed of in such shocking circumstances need to transport themselves back to the Ireland we had from the 1920s to the 1960s. It is absolutely pointless, when trying to understand the motives of the nuns involved, applying the norms of this more affluent, mainly secular, better informed age, to the psychological rigidity of Ireland back then.

‘Mothers also buried’ in mass Irish baby grave

THE historian who discovered that 796 children may be buried in a mass grave in the west of Ireland believes three mothers are also interred there with their babies.

Catherine Corless has established that nine women were buried in the grave in the grounds of the former St Mary’s mother-and-baby home in Tuam, Co Galway. She has identified three of them by matching the home addresses on their death certificates with the addresses of those of the children. She has so far been unable to identify the other six women.

Corless is adamant that the Tuam crypt, which she says was originally a septic tank, contains scores of bodies.

Barry Sweeney, who accidentally found the grave in 1975 when he was playing there with a friend, Francis Hopkins, said he had been left with the impression that there were “about 20 bodies” of boys aged 10 to 12.

The tides are finally turning…

Twenty years I’ve been at this, promoting and advocating for the rights of adopted people in and from Ireland (and in the US). We’ve talked, cajoled, written, and held countless meetings with successive governments in that period. A small but fearless band of us connected in the early days of the Internet, spanning the Atlantic. It was the first time I’d ever spoken with people adopted in and from Ireland in my life. We eventually began a Yahoo! group, which even today continues to receive members and posts. Some of us who had been ‘banished’ to the US, particularly in the Northeast, formed a small group (Adopted Citizens of Eire).

The topics have certainly been well-covered, even internationally. In 1989, activist and survivor Paddy Doyle led the charge with his excellent The God Squad. In 1997, former RTÉ journalist Mike Milotte researched and published his results on the trafficking of children from Ireland to the US in his seminal Banished Babies (updated in 2012). Mary Raftery and Eoin O’Sullivan had written Suffer the Little Children on the heels of Raftery’s award-winning three-part series States of Fear on RTÉ in 1999. Stephen Humphries produced an excellent documentary on the Magdalene Laundries, Sex in a Cold Climate, in 1997 and it eventually became the basis for Peter Mullan’s award-winning feature film The Magdalene Sisters in 2002. BBC also released the documentary Sinners in 2002. The latest, and perhaps most widely-seen chronicle of Irish adoption, is the award-winning film Philomena. The film was inspired by Martin Sixsmith’s 2009 book, The Lost Son of Philomena Lee. And our heroine, the real-life Philomena Lee, has been playing a blinder as one of the most eloquent, gracious and courageous spokeswomen for Irish mothers of loss. Thanks to her good work, Adoption Rights Alliance has now partnered with The Philomena Project, and it set the cogs in motion toward the most recent explosion and revelation in Tuam.

A MAN born in one of the most notorious mother-and-baby homes has called for a major audit of its cemetery to establish whether it too hides a mass grave.

John Barrett said: "I have been saying for years that we need answers about what exactly happened at places like Bessborough.

"There were always rumours about burials and the (Bessborough) graveyard. There could well be thousands of babies buried there. This was the largest mothers-and-baby home in Ireland so who knows?

"I think we now need to find out whether these were just rumours, or whether just like Tuam in Galway, there was some- thing tragic going on."

Scientists secretly vaccinated more than 2,000 children in religious-run homes in suspected illegal drug trials, it emerged today.

Old medical records show that 2,051 children and babies in Irish care homes were given a one-shot diphtheria vaccine for international drugs giant Burroughs Wellcome between 1930 and 1936.

There is no evidence that consent was ever sought, nor any records of how many may have died or suffered debilitating side-effects as a result.

The scandal was revealed as Irish premier, Enda Kenny, ordered ministers to see whether there are more mass baby graves after the discovery that 800 infants may be buried in a septic tank outside a former mother and baby home in Tuam, Co. Galway.

The Taioseach intervened from the United States yesterday to say that he had ordered his officials to 'see what the scale is, what's involved here, and whether this is isolated or if there are others around the country that need to be looked at.'

Michael Dwyer, of Cork University’s School of History, found the child vaccination data by trawling through tens of thousands of medical journal articles and archive files.

He discovered that the trials were carried out before the vaccine was made available for commercial use in the UK.

Homes where children were secretly tested included Bessborough, in Co. Cork and Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, both of which are at the centre of the mass baby graves scandal.

Bodies of nine women who died in the Tuam Mother and Baby home may also lie near the 796 infants buried in a septic tank on the grounds, according to locals.

The records obtained by local historian Catherine Corless – which show that close to 800 babies died at the Tuam Mother and Baby home – also reveal that nine women died over the same period.

However, she has been unable to ascertain where their graves are.

Local man Martin Ward, who is heavily involved in the committee to erect a plaque in memory of the dead, said he believes the women lie alongside the infants.

"We believe there's nine women buried there as well,according to the records. They show nine women died and we presume that they are buried there," he said.

They will now decide whether to launch a full criminal investigation into the dumping of the children’s bodies without proper burial or records.

The move came as President Michael D Higgins said he was “appalled” by the revelations and called for a Government inquiry.

The bodies of nine women who died at the Tuam mother and Baby home may also be in the septic tank believed to hold the bodies of 796 children.

Catherine Corless – the local historian who first discovered the death records of the children – show nine women also died at the home during the same period and their burial spots are currently unkown. At this point Corless can confirm that the women died at the home between the years of 1937 to 1961 but she has not been able to find graves for the women. Corless stresses that she cannot confirm the nine are buried with the children.

“When I was getting the names of the children who died in the home ...they also gave me a list of nine adult women who died, and it stated on the certs that they died in the home in Tuam.

“Now, I can’t confirm that they were buried with the children. They died in the home during the years from 1937 to 1961, that’s all I can tell you. I have nine names and I have no idea where they are,” Corless told Newstalk.

DETECTIVES have visited the site where almost 800 babies are believed to be buried in a mass grave.

Two officers called to the site in Tuam, Co Galway, yesterday along with Frannie Hopkins (51) who found the mass grave when he was 12.

It is also feared that the bodies of nine women who died in the Tuam Mother and Baby Home may lie near the 796 infants buried in a septic tank in the grounds.

After meeting the detectives, Mr Hopkins went through in detail where he had discovered the bodies.

“They brought me up to the site and I showed them where it was and how we came across it. It was all quite informal and only took about 15 minutes,” he said.

The bishop of Tuam has released a statement in which he seeks to distance his diocese from the appalling treatment of the women who were locked up in the notorious Mother and baby Home.

In doing so, he follows in the footsteps of Cardinal Cahal Daly, who also sought to distance himself from any responsiblity for the monstrous behaviour of Father Brendan Smyth, the paedophile whose activities brought down a government and first exposed to the world what was really going on behind the veil of sanctity in Ireland.

Daly, you might recall, pointed out that he had no authority over Brendan Smyth, because the priest was a member of the Norbertine order and was therefore under the control of his religious superior within that order. This was why, according to Daly, he could not intervene in the priest’s rape of children. He was powerless to do so.

Oddly enough, this lack of power didn’t prevent Daly’s successor from intervening in the activities of another priest who was also a member of a religious order. Cardinal Seán Brady who, as a young priest, had sworn abused children to secrecy on pain of damnation, had no hesitation in stepping in when Father Iggy O’Donovan, an Augustinian priest in Drogheda committed a transgression in 2006.

His crime? Iggy O’Donovan celebrated an ecumenical service with a Protestant clergyman, in a spirit of reconciliation and solidarity.

When Dr Deeny, the Chief Medical Officer, unilaterally closed Bessborough Home because of the number of children it was killing, the Papal Nuncio complained him to DeValera on the order of Bishop Lucey of Cork, even though the home was run by nuns.

The bishops knew everything and the bishops controlled everything. Let us not forget that this bishop of Tuam was the very same one to whom the entire county library catalogue was submitted for vetting. Gilmartin selected the books to be burned, and yet, somehow, Michael Neary would have us believe he was a benign, bumbling old Santa Claus figure who had nothing to do with the systemic oppression of women in post-independence Ireland.

Every country is an Organised Hypocrisy to some degree. Countries have aspirations and stated principles, which more often than not, contrast with a grim reality - - at least in democracies today, there is an opportunity for some rebalancing.

Thomas Jefferson, America's third president and a cruel slave master, who had penned the line in the 1776 Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal..." fathered at least six children with his slave Sally Hemings but he regarded them as sub-human, while Karl Marx a German philosopher, who had seen the grim existence for workers in Germany and Britain in the first century of the industrial revolution, would not have expected to become the god of brutal dictatorships that crushed the human spirit in the twentieth century.

The revelation that 796 babies died in a facility run by a religious order in Tuam, County Galway over 36 years, is shocking even after the litany of stories of abuse in recent decades.

Two sectarian states had developed in Ireland from the 1920's and in the South, behind the veneer of "republican principles," conservative elites held power and brooked little opposition.

Explainer: What is happening with the mass grave of children found in Tuam?

IN THE SPACE of two weeks, the story about a mass grave at a former mother and baby home in Galway has grown from something that was just talked about locally in Tuam to a worldwide news story.

The oh-so-gradual unfolding of the story, beginning in the 1970s with the discovery of multiple skeletons, seemed to take people by surprise. After breaking in the media almost a fortnight ago, it took more than a week before any politician made a comment about it, and it was days before national mainstream outlets covered it.

Here, we look at how the story has unfolded, and all of the many, many questions that still remain.

What is the home at the centre of the controversy?

From 1925 until 1961, an order of nuns calls the Bon Secours Sisters ran an institution at this building in Tuam in Co Galway.

The institution was called St Mary’s but was known locally as The Home. Unmarried women in the area who became pregnant were sent there to give birth away from their families, as at the time, having a so-called ‘illegitimate’ child was regarded as shameful.

The babies were then left in the orphanage to be raised by the nuns. Some of them were put up for adoption while some remained in the care of the nuns.

Some of the poorer women who gave birth were forced to work for the nuns in the institution after they had their child as a way to pay for the service which had been provided to them.

We’ve become indifferent to dead babies

THE Tuam babies story this week says much about the past, but about the present also.

The graveyard in the grounds of the former so-called mother-and-baby home was first discovered by two 12-year-old boys, in 1975. One of them opened the concrete cover and was met with the horror below. Pretty quickly, the cover was drawn across again. In the 1970s, the past had not yet been acknowledged. Indeed, the past wasn’t even past.

The next major juncture in the story was last October, by which time local historian, Catherine Corless, had painstakingly compiled and matched records from the home. Corless concluded that the concrete tank must contain most, if not all, of the nearly 800 infants who had died in the home during its existence, between 1925 and 1961.

The story was first published in the Connaught Tribune on October 10 last, which reported that the number of babies allegedly involved was 788. Continuing research has brought this number up to 796.

Declan Tierney’s report in the Tribune began: “Research has shown that there are 788 children, from newborns to eight-year-olds, buried in a graveyard that was attached to an old orphanage in Tuam.

“And a group of interested individuals have now established the names of each of the children, what age they were when they died, and the causes of their deaths. It is now their intention to erect a memorial in their honour and this will contain the names of each of the 788 children.”

Much confusion still surrounds the alleged discovery of human remains near a mother-and-baby home run by the Sisters of Bon Secours in Tuam.

Since its appearance in the Irish Daily Mail, the story has buzzed furiously about social media while broadcasters and other newspapers tried to sort rumour from hard fact.

By Wednesday, Charlie Flanagan, Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, was sufficiently concerned to describe the revelations as “a shocking reminder of a darker past in Ireland when our children were not cherished as they should have been”.

Further details are gradually oozing their way across newsprint and the airwaves. Whatever we subsequently learn about this squalid story, it can’t be denied that the Catholic Church has had another bad week. (That organisation doesn’t have too many good ones these days.)

It is hard not to be horrified, sickened and shocked at the heartbreaking revelations that 796 babies died and may have been buried in a mass grave in the grounds of a home run by the Sisters of the Bon Secours in Tuam, Co Galway, between 1925 and 1961.

As a mother, I am mourning to my core the loss of these precious lives. It is nearly beyond my capacity to understand how helpless, tiny human beings could have been apparently discarded and treated in this way.

The full facts surrounding the deaths will probably never be established. But the question on all our minds is what happened these babies? Did they die when the mother was in childbirth? Did they die from malnutrition and neglect? Did they die from an illness that is now easily treatable? Did they die alone?

These infants died in a mother and baby home at a disgraceful period in Ireland when unmarried mothers were banished and hidden away and cruelly forced to give up their infants for adoption on birth.

As founding chief executive of the government-funded Crisis Pregnancy Agency, I understand the trauma of a crisis pregnancy and our shameful history in failing to support Irish girls and women who were pregnant and unmarried.

Eighteen years ago, on May 11th, 1996, Padraig O’Morain wrote in this newspaper about a woman he called Eileen, whose baby was taken from her in a mother-and-baby home and sent to the US for adoption.

It followed an announcement the previous month by Dick Spring, who was at the time the tánaiste and minister for foreign affairs, that files on the adoption of Irish babies in the US had been found. It was said this offered hope that birth mothers and children taken from them for adoption could meet again.

We’ve had four statutory reports since then on the abuses of children, and the McAleese report on the Magdalene laundries, but no investigation into mother-and-baby homes.

Even the deeply moving story of Philomena Lee, as recounted in the film ‘Philomena’ last year, did not stir the national conscience to action.

Corless, who lives outside Tuam, has been working for several years on records associated with the former St Mary’s mother-and-baby home in the town. Her research has revealed that 796 children, most of them infants, died between 1925 and 1961, the 36 years that the home, run by Bon Secours, existed.

Between 2011 and 2013 Corless paid €4 each time to get the children’s publicly available death certificates. She says the total cost was €3,184. “If I didn’t do it, nobody else would have done it. I had them all by last September.”

Government acts with speed only when in own interests

AS horrific as it is, the dumping ground for hundreds of dead babies at the Bon Secours home in Tuam should not be the focal point of our concern, but rather how they ended up there, and why no one cared for so long.

The grim revelations that have been forcing themselves slowly to the surface of public consciousness for decades once again show our politicians only act with speed when it is in their interest to do so.

Even calling the Tuam establishment a “home” feels wrong, as Independent TD Catherine Murphy demanded the grave be labelled a crime scene.

“We are hearing references to ‘burials’, when, in fact we are talking about bodies being disposed of in a septic tank. Clearly, these were not respectful burials — they were disposals, as though these children were subhuman. It is stomach-churning. If this septic tank was discovered anywhere else in the country other than beside a religious institution, it would already have been declared a crime scene. It begs the question of why, in fact, it has not been declared as such, which it should and must be,” Ms Murphy told the Dáil.

And in response we got the usual platitudes of pity and pious shock from the Government front bench, but precious little else.

In his first test as Children’s Minister Charlie Flanagan flailed around badly, getting off to a poor start with group think, jargon-speak about looking at creating an “inter-departmental process” to deal with the situation which should see a response within a month, so the Government can decide what to do next. Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald has also been extraordinarily slow in intervening.

Private firm conducts radar tests at Tuam site

A private engineering company has carried out a subsurface radar examination of the site at the former Bons Secours mother-and-baby home in Tuam, Co Galway.

The examination follows reports of an unmarked mass grave at the former Catholic church-run home, where almost 800 children died between 1925 and 1961.

TST Engineering was commissioned to do the work by the Irish Mail on Sunday.

The examination has been completed and a company spokesperson told RTÉ the results will be known within a few days.

In a statement, the Irish Mail on Sunday confirmed the Ground Penetrating Radar analysis was conducted by TST Engineering.

"Following consultation and ongoing co-operation with local historian Catherine Corless and the Children's Home Graveyard Committee, the Irish Mail on Sunday commissioned a survey of the site of the alleged mass grave at the site of the former Tuam mother and baby home at the Dublin Road housing estate.

Martin Sixsmith’s book, Philomena, published by Penguin Books, was adapted for the screen last year.

The discovery of a grave containing the remains of as many as 800 babies at a former home for unmarried mothers in Ireland is yet another problem for the Irish Catholic Church. The mother and baby home at Tuam in County Galway was run by the nuns of the Sisters of Bon Secours and operated between 1925 and 1961. It took in thousands of women who had committed the “mortal sin” of unwed pregnancy, delivered their babies and was charged with caring for them. But unsanitary conditions, poor food and a lack of medical care led to shockingly high rates of infant mortality. Babies’ bodies were deposited in a former sewage tank.

Sadly, the mass grave at Tuam is probably not unique. I visited the site — the home was demolished in the 1970s — and spoke with locals who remember babies’ skulls emerging from the soil around their houses. When boys broke open the cover of the sewage pit, they found it “full to the brim” of skeletons. Tuam was only one of a dozen mother and baby homes in Ireland in the years after the Second World War, all of which treated their inmates in a similar fashion.

During 10 years of research into the Catholic Church’s treatment of “fallen women” — I wrote about one of them in my book, Philomena, later turned into a feature film starring Dame Judi Dench — I discovered that the girls were refused medical attention, including painkillers, during even the most difficult births; the nuns told them the pain was the penance they must pay for their sin. In the home where Philomena gave birth, an unkempt plot bears the names of babies and mothers, some as young as 15. There are undoubtedly many more there who have no memorial. ...

That sense of guilt and shame remained with the girls for life. One woman whose child was born in Tuam told me she felt it was wrong of her to talk to me even now. At first it was hard to persuade Philomena to tell me her story, too. But when my book was published, she received letters from other “fallen women” saying how grateful they were that someone had had the courage to break the Omertà.

The warped code of honour behind the decades of silence had been inculcated by an all-powerful Catholic Church. For much of the late 20th century, the Irish civil authorities were in thrall to the hierarchy; Archbishop John Charles McQuaid threatened pulpit denunciations if the government contradicted his policies. So the state connived in the mother and baby homes, paying the nuns at Tuam and all the other homes a per capita rate for every inmate.

A survivor of the mother and baby home at the centre of the graves scandal last night revealed the hellish conditions kids were forced to live in.

John Rodgers, 68, described it as the home in Tuam, Co Galway as a "rabid playground where you couldn't get too attached" because kids would simply disappear.

John, who spent five years there, believes the terrible conditions they were forced to live in were responsible for the high mortality rate.

I just learned that in Ireland, Father Fintan Monaghan, a Catholic Church official in whose archdiocese the skeletal remains of almost 800 children were found in a septic tank, weighed in with an opinion on the matter.

The bones, if you’ll recall, are those of babies who were born to unwed mothers, and who died under the awful neglect of Bon Secours nuns between 1925 and 1961. The child mortality rate in Irish Catholic institutions for “fallen women” was reportedly as high as fifty percent.

Regarding the remains of the 800 children found in that sewage tank, Monaghan told a TV crew:

“I suppose we can’t really judge the past from our point of view, from our lens. All we can do is mark it appropriately and make sure there is a suitable place here where people can come and remember the babies that died.”

Got that? We can’t judge the past. Pray tell, father — just how recently should acts of such crassness and cruelty have taken place so that we are allowed, in your divinely-inspired opinion, to judge the perpetrators?

The recent revelations about the mistreatment of young children and babies in homes run by religious orders continues to shock and dismay me.

When I first heard the news that more than 800 babies were buried in what was formally a septic tank I was astonished – because initially I thought it happened in some famine-stricken country today.

Then I thought I was hearing about Nazi Germany. But when I realised it happened in Ireland during my own lifetime to children in the care of religious sisters, I was overcome with a deep sorrow bordering on depression.

There appears to be no reason to doubt the veracity of the horror stories that have come out in the past few days. Yet we do need to be certain of all the facts – and I hope that will be the first thing the Government does.

ONE of the country's newest nuns is horrified by the stories emerging from the mother and baby homes but believes an independent inquiry will not draw a line in the sand on the country's past.

Sr Liz Deasy (41) fears that even when the controversy over the latest scandal to rock the Catholic Church in Ireland subsides it will only be a matter of time before another emerges.

"I've no problem with an independent inquiry but it won't be the end. There will be something else, it's been going on since Bishop Casey and I'm already waiting for the next one to emerge," said Sr Liz, who entered the Cistercian community of St Mary's Abbey, Glencairn, Co Waterford last year.

Although she said the truth needed to come out, she thinks it will be difficult and confusing.

"I was horrified by the headlines but that was then, and this is now, and a lot of those women had nowhere else to go," said Sr Liz, who lives with 32 other nuns at St Mary's.

Two men who survived the Tuam mother and baby home have opened up about the physical and mental scars their childhood experiences left them with.
Galway men Joe Donelan and Colm Sullivan were born 20 years apart in the now infamous Bon Secours home and both have been deeply affected by claims that up to 800 babies were secretly buried on the site.
Joe, who lives in Abbeyknockmoy, was born in the home in December 1938 and considers himself one of the lucky ones as he lived and was adopted at the age of four.
His adoptive parents Mary and John Keane didn’t reveal the truth about his past until he was a teenager – but Joe believes the way he behaved when he first went to live with his new family suggests he was beaten in the home.

Why is it that we are more shocked by what happens to dead babies than to live ones? The story that almost 800 dead babies were buried in a disused sewage tank outside Tuam in rural Ireland turns out to be problematic. It is certain that 796 babies did die under the care of nuns in a home for unmarried mothers there between 1925 and 1961 and that is in itself a shocking statistic. But what gave the story wings was the claim that their bodies had been dumped in a septic tank, widely attributed to Catherine Corless, the local historian who uncovered the scandal.

In an interview she has denied that she ever used the term "dumped". More to the point, it was impossible that 800 children were placed there, since "only" 204 died in the years before the home was connected to the mains water supply, in 1937. In her first account of the discovery, Corless described the structure as a "crypt". Only later did she identify it, from a map, as a septic tank. If the bodies were placed in it long after it had been drained and disused, this would seem much less shocking. That less shocking story is at least plausible: the alternative would be that the nuns buried some babies decently in the unofficial graveyard but just dumped others in the cesspit. On what basis could they possibly have chosen?

This is not to deny that almost 800 children died and were buried in an unofficial graveyard behind the home. In the manner of these things in rural Ireland, it was both known and not known – according to the Irish Times "this small grassy space has been attended for decades by local people, who have planted roses and other flowers there, and put up a grotto in one corner".

Twenty babies dropped in a cesspit as corpses is a horrifying figure. Even one would be dreadful. And of course the whole story fits wonderfully into the larger stories of Irish nuns as heartless and cruel, which many undoubtedly were. But what's interesting to a student of religion is why the desecration of dead bodies should be so very much more shocking than the deaths of living babies.

‘I found remains while digging grave’

A maintenance worker employed in Bessborough in the late 1980s and early 1990s has spoken of how he came across child remains while burying the bodies of two nuns.
Eugene Kelly, from Cork, worked as maintenance man at the former mother-and-baby home and adoption society in Blackrock between 1984 and 1992 and recalls coming across “little skulls and little bones” as he buried two nuns in the small graveyard on the site.
“I was only asked then when Timmy [who operated the farm] was getting too old, when he was semi-retired, would I bury a few of the nuns? I said ‘No problem’ — it was an adventure to me, I was only 19 or 20 at the time. It frightened the bejaysus out of me the first time.
“I remember when I was doing the dig, I came across little skulls and little bones. It was frightening. It was frightening, as it was half past five on a November or something like that, or December, and it was getting dark.”

A full commission of inquiry is being set up, and will have the power to compel documents and witnesses.
It will include at least one institution outside Catholic control.
Speaking today Deputy McDonald said concerns expressed about a report on the issue carried out by Martin McAleese could be addressed in the new investigation.
"To understand the Mother and Baby homes you have to include the Magdalene Laundries," Deputy McDonald said.
"It makes no sense to have a thorough, statutory investigation into those institutions and to excluse the laundries.

Catholic journalist Phil Lawler is disgusted by Archbishop Robert Carlson’s cowardly, butt-covering testimony in a child abuse deposition. Carlson said, under oath, that in the 1980s, when he was serving as an auxiliary bishop in Minnesota, he wasn’t sure that adults having sex with kids was a crime. Excerpt from Lawler’s column:

Is the reputation of the Catholic Church improved by the fact that, yet again, an archbishop has been quoted as saying things that most people find impossible to believe? How could things have been worse, if you had simply told the unvarnished truth to the best of your ability, and admitted what everyone already knows?
For nearly 15 years now, we beleaguered lay Catholics have been subjected to the painful spectacle of watching our Church leaders make implausible statements, feign ignorance, deny responsibility, and fight to prevent disclosure of damaging testimony. That strategy has always failed.
Enough! The paltry defenses, the dog-ate-the-homework excuses are an embarrassment to the Church. Stop it! If you don’t know the truth, if you aren’t prepared to testify to the truth, then you aren’t fit to be a Catholic bishop. If you can’t be a credible witness, resign!
Phil’s not going to like this clip from the same deposition. In it, the lawyer reads from the 1986 deposition of a then-Bishop Watters, who testified that Bishop Carlson had advised him in advance of the deposition on a clerical child sex abuse case that “the best thing you can say is ‘I don’t remember.’” Carlson, now an archbishop, said he doesn’t remember if he ever said that, but he doubts he did:

THIS IS THE LETTER from the Minister for Health’s office in 1957 that approved the Bon Secours mother and baby home in Tuam, County Galway.

The letter (which can be viewed here) states that the minister of the day, Fine Gael’s Tom O’Higgins, approved a number of maternity homes under the provision of section 25 of the Health Act 1953.
Many of these homes were already registered prior to the 1953 provision in the Act, as stated in the letter.

The discovery of a grave containing the remains of as many as 800 babies at a former home for unmarried mothers in Ireland is yet another problem for the Irish Catholic Church.

The mother and baby home at Tuam in County Galway was run by the nuns of the Sisters of Bon Secours and operated between 1925 and 1961. It took in thousands of women who had committed the “mortal sin” of unwed pregnancy, delivered their babies and was charged with caring for them.

But unsanitary conditions, poor food and a lack of medical care led to shockingly high rates of infant mortality. Babies' bodies were deposited in a former sewage tank.

Sadly, the mass grave at Tuam is probably not unique. I visited the site — the home was demolished in the 1970s — and spoke with locals who remember babies' skulls emerging from the soil around their houses. When boys broke open the cover of the sewage pit, they found it “full to the brim” of skeletons.

Tuam was only one of a dozen mother and baby homes in Ireland in the years after World War II, all of which treated their inmates in a similar fashion.

During 10 years of research into the Catholic Church's treatment of “fallen women” — I wrote about one of them in my book, “Philomena,” later turned into a feature film starring Dame Judi Dench — I discovered that the girls were refused medical attention, including painkillers, during even the most difficult births; the nuns told them the pain was the penance they must pay for their sin.

Many of whom have never known who their now elderly or deceased Irish birth parents are says Steed.
Thousands of those secret and illegally adopted children ended up in America after essentially being sold to wealthy families.
Mari Steed of the Adoption Rights Alliance was one of them, born at the notorious Bessborough Home in Cork in 1960 and sent to America as a toddler where she now lives near Philadelphia.
She says the latest news of the Irish government inquiry must be the moment that Ireland finally is forced to open its adoption and medical records.
“The government can no longer afford to look away,” Steed says, believing that Tuam has opened a floodgate that cannot be shut.

THE Ryan and Cloyne reports into child abuse in the Catholic Church could be seen in simple black and white terms: It was easy to loathe the abusers and the parish priests and bishops who colluded to protect them, to shudder at how bereft and powerless the child victims were, and at the torment of parents when they learned what had gone on around them.

But, following Martin McAleese’s Magdalene report last year, the lines began to blur. We saw that 25% of women sent to the laundries had been referred by an arm of the State, 8.8% by priests, and a notable 10.5% by families. We saw how Church, State, and families were complicit in subjugating, degrading, and dehumanising young girls who had fallen foul of Catholic and therefore societal, norms.

The uproar about conditions in mother-and- baby homes over the past number of weeks has underscored this theme — with the finger increasingly pointed at the families and communities that wanted these pregnant women and their babies out of view; who shoved crying girls through the front door of these homes in the dead of night, expected them to feed, care for, and love a child for a year and then to hand their child to a stranger without question.

Nowhere is this blinkered, ignorant, craven supplication and groupthink better illustrated than in the Twitter feed of @limerick1914, where Limerick librarian and historian Liam Hogan posts excerpts from regional newspapers, local authority, and public health archives.

A Tuam Herald report revealed how, in 1907, the Carlow Board of Guardians wholeheartedly approved the Viceregal Commission’s recommendation that all unmarried mothers who had two or more children should be detained at the workhouse. These women were seen as beyond redemption.

After Joseph Ratzinger publicly announced his plans to retire, quite a few people who are aware of this website or the @Fire_the_PopeTwitter account remarked how I got my wish or, jokingly, how my website may have led to the first resignation of a pope in 600 years.

Yes, I’ve had Ratzinger’s picture prominently displayed on this site and, given his long record both as the pope and as the one person responsible for handling all sex-crime cases in the Church, I strongly believed him to be incompetent at best.

However, FireThePope doesn’t just mean fire Joseph Ratzinger. FireThePope isn’t a cause to bring down one man. FireThePope is an effort to expose the entire Roman Catholic Church, as is, as fraudulent and there is no better way to do that than to start at the top.

Not your Father’s church.

The Roman Catholic Church sets itself apart from all other religions, including Christian denominations, by claiming its head, the pope, is the successor of Peter and that Jesus anointed Peter to be the head of his church. The Church points to Matthew 16:13-20 to support this claim. Catholics conclude the Roman Catholic Church is the “one true church” of Jesus Christ and all other Protestant or non-Roman orthodox churches are inferior to it.

Roman Catholics call their church “the bride of Christ” and “Holy Mother Church”. These nicknames market the idea that Roman Catholicism dates back to the days of Jesus Christ and it – or “She”, as they say – is the very foundation of Christianity and all other religions are mere offshoots or sequels to Roman Catholicism.

Ultimately, Roman Catholicism rests solely on the supremacy of Peter and the apostles. Without the supremacy of Peter, there would be no pope. Without the supremacy of the apostles, there would be no priesthood as the Roman Church defines it. Without the superhuman powers of Catholic priests, bye-bye sacraments, indulgences, and the entire institution.

Today, let’s focus on the papacy. Following are ten reasons why there should never be another pope and, if there is, he should be completely ignored by the Catholic laity, the media, politicians, and the public at large.

Because the Vatican bases its very existence on a scene from the New Testament, it must also accept other verses of the NT in order to be consistent. Either the NT should be accepted as true, non-fictional accounts or not. Either those accounts must be taken literally or not. But, one cannot say this is a source of truth, inspired by the Holy Spirit and then pick and choose which passages the Church wants to follow or not.

1. The church of Jesus Christ in the bible was not a physical empire. Matthew 24:1-2 - ”Jesus left the temple precincts then, and his disciples came up and pointed out to him the buildings of the temple area. His comment was: ‘Do you see all these buildings? I assure you, not one stone will be left on another – it will all be torn down.’” 1 Corinthians 3:16 – “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the spirit of God dwells in you?” Also, Peter 2:5-9 – “Be yourselves as living stones built into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Jesus preached in homes and on hillsides, not in buildings. He only went in to temples to draw people out of them or to scold the church leaders. The word catholic, found in the bible with a lower-case c, means universal. In the first century, the wordchurch (also lower-case c) meant a society of men, women, and children who are spiritually – not necessarily physically – united to serve God. According to the NT, Jesus established the catholic church – a universal society of believers who would offer spiritualsacrifices. I explain below who really instituted the Roman Catholic Church, which requires material (pagan) sacrifices.

2. The church of Jesus Christ was not built upon one man. The idea that the church of Jesus was built upon one man is preposterous. Yet, that is what the Roman Church claims. Its only foundation is the notion that Peter was chosen by Jesus to be the first pope and that all popes are Peter’s successors, chosen by the Holy Spirit and infallible in all of their declarations. Roman Catholicism teaches that the pope, acting on behalf of the Church (notice the capital C indicating the Corporation) has the power and a duty to act as a mediator between the Creator and his creatures. It has been a long-held tradition that the Vatican, the Magisterium, and the clergy would interpret the bible for the laity. However, 1 Corinthians 3:11 reads, “For other foundation no one can lay, but that which has been laid, which is Jesus Christ”. According to scripture, Jesus, not Peter, is the foundation of the Christian church. Jesus is also the sole mediator, so says 1 Timothy 2:5: ”And the truth is this: ‘God is one. One also is the mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, and who gave himself ransom for all.” According to the New Testament where Catholics turn to justify the existence of their Church, there is only one mediator between God and the people and that is Jesus Christ, not Peter and not Joseph Ratzinger.

3. The church of Jesus Christ in the bible did not have a pope.The word pope is not in the bible, where the Roman Church points to as justification for itself. The early church described in the New Testament speaks of bishops who were overseers or local supervisors of the effort to spread Christianity. They were not rulers over the people. No one bishop had authority over any other. No one bishop was the head of the effort. There was a bishop in many major cities, including one in Rome. It so happened that certain Roman emperors (namely Constantine and Charlemagne) elevated the position and authority of the bishop of Rome, specifically, because they had the power to do so and because it was convenient as Rome was the seat of power. Emperors appointed bishops and abbots and usually appointed members of aristocratic families. The idea of a pope – one bishop over all others – was a corrupt power grab by murderous dictators and had nothing to do with Jesus Christ or anything in the bible.

4. The Peter of the throne was not the apostle but an impostor. Remember, the apostle Peter originally went by the name of Simon. Then, he was referred to as Simon Peter. Jesus named him Peter at the rock because the name Peter – or Petros (Greek) means rock. This Peter was from Cyprus, according to the bible. But, there is another Simon in the bible, this one from Samaria and he was a troublemaker. Locals called him Simon the

If there was a pope on a throne in the days of the early church, it was not Peter the Apostle but Simon the Magician. Simon sat on a throne; Peter never did. Simon claimed to be God; Peter never did. Simon claimed to have supernatural powers; Peter never did. Simon Magnus even started going by the name Peter in order to confuse people. They both had the same name, they both died in the same year – 67 A.D., and they both had spent time in Rome. The proof that the Simon of Samaria, not Cyprus, sat on the throne in Rome is the documentation that Magnus stayed in Rome for many years at a time while the apostle came and went quite often.

5. The apostle Peter never considered himself God or Jesus Christ. Again, the idea of the papacy rests on the supremacy of Peter. The Roman Church claims the pope is “Christ’s (sole) representative on earth”. The Peter whom the popes are supposed to have succeeded was married with at least one child – a daughter. He never sat on a throne and he never claimed to have magic powers or to be infallible. He never claimed to be better or more important than the other apostles or early leaders of the Christian church. He never dressed in fancy clothes, he never wore a ring to be kissed, and he never insisted on the red carpet treatment. Acts 10:25-27: “As Peter entered, Cornelius went to meet him, dropped to his knees before him and bowed low. Peter said, ‘Get up! I am only a man myself.’” When Nero sentenced Peter to death by crucifixion, Peter insisted on hanging on the cross upside down because he was unworthy to die as Jesus died. Peter the apostle, claimed by the Church as the first pope was never a pope and his philosophy and practices, according to the New Testament, were a far contrast to those of the papacy no matter who is holding the title.

6. The Roman Catholic Church was not established until the 4th Century. Roman Catholics claim Peter of the bible was the first pope and that there is an unbroken line of popes stretching from biblical times to present-day. This claim is nothing but a re-writing of history. The Church needs that lineage in order to justify itself and the papacy yet it does not have the facts on its side so they have to create a new reality. What the Church

has done is go back and list anyone who was a bishop of Rome as a pope. The actual papacy didn’t begin until the Roman Catholic Church began and that wasn’t until the 4th Century with Pope Constantine I – the emperor – who ruled from the “chair of St. Peter” from 306-337. Constantine came to the rescue of Christians who were being persecuted by Emperor Diocletian. It’s not that he was overcome by compassion but realized he could take political advantage from the growing number of Christians. This ties the pagan Roman Empire to the Catholic Church whose members also worship objects and offer material sacrifices.

7. The papacy was on life support as recently as 1870. In the mid-19th Century, there was an effort to unify Italy which was split in two by the Papal States governed by the pope, then Pope Pius IX (the one who dreamed up Immaculate Conception). Victor Emmanuel II, the new King of Italy, had seized all of the Church-controlled territory except a small segment of Rome. Napoleon, who had previously been an ally of Emmanuel, protected the pope and by having some of his troops stand guard at the Vatican. When the Franco-Prussia War intensified, Napoleon pulled his troops out of Rome, leaving the pope defenseless. The Italian troops moved in and the pope lost all of his temporal (civil) power minus rule over the tiny territory of the Vatican. Emmanuel allowed the pope to keep the Vatican and freed him from Italian rule but the pope was defiant. Pius IX refused to recognize Emmanuel’s new kingdom and he voluntarily kept himself a prisoner of the Vatican. He cried anti-Catholic bias until support and donations poured in for him, including from Catholics in America. The empire of the Roman Church was all but lost in 1870. It took more deception to keep it alive.

8. The papacy was corruptly propped back up by a fascist dictator. In the 1920′s, the Italian government wished to settle its differences with the Church. At the time, the Prime Minister of Italy was Benito Mussolini.

He conspired with the Vatican to shut out populist factions in the country in order to amass more power and control for himself. The Vatican silenced priests who favored a more democratic government. In return, Mussolini gifted the Church by officially recognizing the Vatican as an independent and sovereign city-state. Within the borders of Italy, popes would receive diplomatic immunity and the Church would receive financial reparations for its loss of the Papal States. Also, Roman Catholicism would be the one state religion in Italy. These agreements were called the Lateran Pacts and they are what revived the much weakened papacy. Mussolini would go on to become one of history’s most brutal dictators. Today, Vatican City, the whole 0.2 square miles of it, is recognized by the United Nations as a sovereign city-state of which the pope is head.

9. The pope is an absolute monarch at a time when most educated and reasonable human beings believe in freedom, democracy, and accountability. In 2011, the world witnessed what is now referred to as The Arab Spring. Ordinary people protested – many to their deaths – for freedom, respect, and democratic elections. Many citizens of some nations in the Middle East had been oppressed for generations and they finally decided it was time to take a stand against tyranny. It has been said there is a natural hunger to live freely, no matter what part of the world one lives. The pope is an absolute monarch, only one of a few that still exist and certainly the most powerful. As such, and because he enjoys diplomatic immunity both in Italy and out, he is accountable to no one. The pope is elected but not by the people he represents as in a democracy. He is elected by the same men whom he appointed to the College of Cardinals. Once a pope takes office, he is unaccountable to anyone inside the Church or out. This type of power is contrary to what the New Testament described when Jesus turned tables on the clergy. The pope, like Simon Magnus, claims to be God. Only someone with a God-complex would claim to be above the law and every other human being.

10. The papacy is not inspired by the Holy Spirit. If anything, it would be inspired by the spirit of Lucifer. As construction workers ready the Vatican chimney for the upcoming puffs of white smoke or black,

rational human beings are expected to believe that the Holy Spirit is guiding the process of the papal conclave. When cardinals vote a certain way, we are told, it was because the Holy Spirit told them to. It’s time for a reality check. Many of the men who will be voting – or running – for the next pope have blood on their hands – blood ofchildren. Yet, we are supposed to believe they have an inside track to the Holy Spirit. From the beginning of the Roman Catholic Church, throughout its history, and including today, Roman Catholicism has been a corrupt empire disguised as a Christian religion. I’ve heard many people credit it merely because “it has been around for 2,000 years”. It hasn’t been around that long and does it matter that it has only survived as long has it has because it has succeeded in fooling gullible people? Does it matter that it has grown as large as it has because many of its converts joined only under the threat of death? Does it matter than the majority of Catholics were entered into the Church before the age of reason? Catholics are quick to remind us of “all the good the Church does”. There isn’t a tyrant in history that couldn’t claim the same. Evil almost always presents itself in disguise – as something good. When deception is the foundation of an institution, no amount of superficial acts that come out of it can make it good. Deeds and institutions can only be good if they are based in truth. Like it or not, the spirit that is guiding the Roman Catholic Church isn’t holy, it is evil. And the only way to kill a serpent is by chopping off its head.

There’s an elephant quietly sitting in the nave that everyone on all sides of the clergy sex abuse crisis have been diligently ignoring, even the victims themselves. No clergy or even would-be reformers have really remarked on it yet, although it should be more obvious with each and every sad story. More importantly, it is a troubling issue that touches on the very heart and soul of Catholicism.

The monstrous truth is simply this: what the clergy sex abuse crisis clearly demonstrates is that the sacramental system has failed.

This is not just a case of hierarchical reneging of responsibility.There’s more to this than some bad apples. This is nothing that a few reforms can fix, some screening of seminarians or more pastoral responses by bishops. It is nothing less than a fundamental challenge to the entire Catholic Church, and it shows that the spiritual principles the whole structure is supposedly based on simply do not work.

Think about it. The offenders here are Roman Catholic priests, highly trained men. But unlike other professionals, these men are supposedly set apart and dedicated to lives of the spirit. They claim to have the power to forgive sins and make God appear.

They not only administer the sacraments to others, but also receive them themselves daily. That means, among other things, frequent confession to other priests. Moreover, many of these men belong to religious orders or are otherwise under close spiritual direction. They are supposed to confide everything to their confessors and superiors and to obey them unquestioningly.

So what went wrong? When an abusive priest goes to confession, does he start, “Bless me, father, for I have sinned: I buggered an altar boy three times this week”? And does the confessor tell him to say 3 Our Fathers and 4 Hail Marys and not to do it again?

According to their own theory, confessors have the power to forgive sins, but also to refuse to do so if sorrow is insufficient. Moreover, they are to appoint penances – if they wish, they can require satisfaction or significant signs of reform from the penitent before absolution. Some sins – such as solicitation for sex in the confessional – are even deemed so serious that only higher prelates, sometimes only the Pope or his appointed delegate can forgive them.

Yet the abusers continue to abuse. So are the sexually active priestslying to their confessors? This would mean that not only do the perpetrating priests remain in a state of mortal sin and are automatically excommunicated, they perform the sacraments in that state which is itself a grave sacrilege.

Or, even worse, are all the abusive priests linked? Do they only go to confession to like-minded perps who will understand? Is there then an organized network of sexually perpetrating priests, all busily enabling each other? This adds collusion and conspiracy to the sinand would indicate that the very structure itself is rotten to the core.

The evidence available suggests that perhaps both scenarios are true to varying degrees in different situations. Either way, however, the result is much the same.

The sacraments are meant to unite believers with Christ. Not just to remove the accumulations of sin like the weekly laundry, but togradually improve the recipient. They are intended to sanctify and uplift the faithful, increase devotion to God, charity to fellow humans, and moral stamina in the face of evil.

If the sacraments actually worked like this, wouldn’t we hear ennobling stories of clerical reform, of some molester inspired to truly repent and devote himself to the cause? But rather, the stories are depressingly the same, of priests caught time and again, transferred, treated, and now finally, laicized often against their will, with no regret or even acknowledgement of their evil.

What this means, each person must decide in their own conscience. But perhaps the fall off in confessions over the years itself tells the story. Why should anyone, lay or not, risk a ritual that seems so impotent in promoting reform and may, instead of granting grace, actually expose them to greater human wickedness?
