Doe 28 has brought a civil suit against the diocese claiming sexual abuse of a minor by Father Robert Klein.

As Christina Keneally has reported for The Guardian, in his testimony before the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, Bishop Geoffrey Robinson minced no words. He excoriated the silence of the powerful pope John Paul II, and said that Pope Francis has not provided "real leadership" regarding child sexual abuse in the Catholic church.

When the Australian government becomes aware of the extent of child sexual abuse in institutions, it holds a royal commission with open hearings.
When the leadership of the Catholic church becomes aware of the extent of child sexual abuse, it designs secretive processes to protect the institution and spins to its priests that there are worse sins than sexually abusing children, such as abortion or homicide.
Unfortunately, people like the influential Catholic journalist Michael Sean Winters, who writes for National Catholic Reporter and who loves to sort Catholics into rigid, neatly defined sets of left and right and sheep and goats, still don't get the problem. These influential spokespeople for the Catholic center, who want to exercise their influence by reading many fellow Catholics (especially those to the left of center) out of their definition of Catholicism and out of the conversation defining Catholic identity, keep offering us as bona fide Catholicism a strange mix of papal adulation (of papolatry, to be precise) and biblical-catechetical fundamentalism that turns biblical formulas, and the very words used in them, into sacred shibboleths whose meaning and cultural determination theologians are forbidden to investigate.

Pope Francis vowed last year that bishops who harm children will receive “no special treatment," but accused child molester Józef Wesołowski appears to be enjoying just that. While waiting for his trial to resume, the ex-archbishop is free to walk around Vatican City, according to a recent report by the BBC.
"Monsignor Wesołowski is not confined to his room. He can walk around the Vatican, around its 40 hectares [~100 acres],” said Ciro Benedettini, vice director of the Holy See press office, to the BBC. (This quote was translated by BishopAccountability.org. The article appears to have been published only in Spanish.)
If the BBC report is accurate, this loosening of restrictions raises urgent child safety concerns. The evidence that the former papal nuncio is guilty of serious child sex crimes is so strong that another Vatican tribunal took the extraordinary step of laicizing him. Unless he is heavily guarded at all times, unaccompanied minors in Vatican City could be at risk. (Vatican City’s ‘40 hectares’ include St. Peter’s Square, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors every day.)
Last September, Wesołowski had been placed under house arrest. Vatican spokesperson Federico Lombardi said the “restrictive measure” was imposed because of “the seriousness of the allegations” and was at the “express desire” of Pope Francis.
The Pope and Vatican officials clearly felt then that Wesołowski was too dangerous to be unconfined. Have they changed their minds? If so, on what basis? What measures are they taking to guarantee he has no access to minors in St. Peter’s Square and elsewhere?
Much is at stake here, from the safety of children to the credibility of Pope Francis’s celebrated pledge that no bishops will be treated as ‘daddy’s boys’ on his watch.
Already, the ex-archbishop’s detention in the VCS criminal system has been far more relaxed than that of Paolo Gabriele, Pope Benedict’s former butler, the only other person tried criminally in the tiny governate. Gabriele was arrested in May 2012 for stealing and leaking papal documents. Although his crime was non-violent and harmed no children – indeed, some regard him as a whistleblower – Gabriele was treated harshly before his trial. Unlike Wesołowski, who was given house confinement for the first 60 days after his arrest and was freed thereafter to move around Vatican City, Gabriele was locked in a Vatican jail for the first two months after his arrest, and endured inhumane conditions during the first few weeks of that period, according to his testimony at trial. His cell was so narrow he could not stretch out his arms, and it was lit brightly around the clock for 15-20 days in a row. He said he was sleep-deprived and depressed and that his vision was affected.
Given the high probability that Wesołowski is a dangerous man, Vatican officials should jail him or return him to strict house arrest.
If he is free but being monitored, officials should explain the details of the monitoring system, recognizing that the record of the abuse crisis includes many tragic failures of monitoring arrangements that seemed fail-proof on paper.
They should also inform the public of the date that the trial will resume, and explain why it did not resume third week of July. That's when the defendant’s hospital stay ended, according to the BBC report.
Pope Francis and the Holy See have been intent on controlling this case from the moment they spirited Wesołowski out of the Dominican Republic without reporting him to local law enforcement. At the very least, they now must prove to a skeptical international community that a former high-ranking church official can be prosecuted impartially by the tiny theocracy's untried criminal justice system. Confining the accused child molester to jail or strict house arrest would be a modest sign that they are capable of the “just and necessary rigor” that Pope Francis promised last year.

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee would compensate more sexual abuse victims than it originally stated as part of a $21 million settlement announced earlier this month, under the reorganization plan it filed Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
Members of the bankruptcy creditors committee raised concerns about the archdiocese's announcement, saying it had excluded 72 survivors they believed were to be compensated when they agreed to the settlement in July. Thirty-three of those would now be eligible for compensation, according to the revised plan.
"We're much closer to where we thought it was going to be," said Charles Linneman, who chairs the creditors committee, which is made up of abuse victims but represents all creditors in the case.
"The archdiocese has worked with us in the last two weeks, and a lot more claims have moved to a higher class," he said. "And there's more to come that we are still working on."
Jerry Topczewski, chief of staff for Archbishop Jerome Listecki, said in an email that the church is continuing to work with survivors' attorneys to address questions regarding the treatment of their claims "and will continue to do so until the plan is confirmed."

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin — The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee filed its bankruptcy reorganization plan Monday, formalizing a recent settlement deal that will divvy up $21 million among more than 300 victims of clergy sex abuse.
The archdiocese submitted the bankruptcy reorganization plan Monday night, archdiocese spokesman Jerry Topczewski said.
The archdiocese filed for bankruptcy protection in 2011 to address its sex abuse lawsuit liabilities. The bankruptcy plan is scheduled for review in November, and church officials are “hopeful this is approved by the judge,” Topczewski said.

Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C. of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria has, upon the unanimous advise of the Diocesan Review Commission, required Father Terry Cassidy, Pastor of St. Ann Church, Peoria, Illinois, to step down from public ministry. Allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor were made against Cassidy dating back nearly thirty years ago. He can no longer function as a Catholic priest in any public capacity, wear clerical garb or the Roman collar, and is to refrain from using the title Reverend or Father.

We are saddened that Peoria’s bishop says nothing about calling the police about a child sex abuse report against one of his priests.
Bishop Daniel Jenky says that Fr. Terry Cassidy has essentially been suspended because of an abuse report. But in his news release Jenky does not urge victims, witnesses and whistleblowers to call police. Nor does he say whether or not he has turned over Fr. Cassidy’s personnel files to police.
We hope Jenky gives all of Fr. Cassidy’s records to law enforcement. And we hope every single person who may have seen, suspected or suffered clergy sex crimes or cover ups in the Peoria area – whether by Cassidy, Jenky or any cleric – will call law enforcement expose wrongdoers, protect kids and start healing.
We also hope that Jenky will go to every parish where Fr. Cassidy has worked, begging anyone with information or suspicions about him to call secular authorities. We also hope that Jenky will send this same message through church bulletins, parish websites and pulpit announcements across the diocese.
Jenky and his and-picked panel obviously believe this is a credible allegation. Otherwise, they would not have made this decision and announcement. Only a fool would believe that a credibly accused child molester only molested once. So we call on Jenky to launch an aggressive outreach effort to both find and help other victims of Fr. Cassidy and to help law enforcement potentially prosecute him.

VENICE, Italy Full-length films about two of Massachusetts’ longest-running scandals make their debuts at the Venice Film Festival this week.
One — “Black Mass” — covers the life of convicted mobster James “Whitey” Bulger. The other — “Spotlight” — looks at how The Boston Globe exposed the sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests.
The resemblance of the two stories is striking. Both are tales of shocking crimes, institutional corruption, cover-up and a crisis of faith that followed.
The first to premiere was “Spotlight.”
The movie is set in late 2001 as investigative reporters for the Globe secretly work to uncover the crimes of former priest John Geoghan. They search for his victims, and seek to obtain sealed documents that show what church authorities did — and, more importantly, what they did not do.
Walter Robinson, who is played by actor Michael Keaton, was the editor of Spotlight, the Globe’s investigative team that gives the movie its title.
“Reporters, we stumble around in the dark a lot,” Robinson said. “We started out focused on one priest but very quickly learned that Geoghan was the tip of the iceberg, that there were many, many other priests.”

St. Louis County District Court Judge Shaun Floerke ordered the secret documents be given under seal to the attorneys of Doe 28.
Doe 28 has brought a civil suit against the diocese claiming sexual abuse of a minor by Father Robert Klein.

As Christina Keneally has reported for The Guardian, in his testimony before the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, Bishop Geoffrey Robinson minced no words. He excoriated the silence of the powerful pope John Paul II, and said that Pope Francis has not provided "real leadership" regarding child sexual abuse in the Catholic church.

When the Australian government becomes aware of the extent of child sexual abuse in institutions, it holds a royal commission with open hearings.
When the leadership of the Catholic church becomes aware of the extent of child sexual abuse, it designs secretive processes to protect the institution and spins to its priests that there are worse sins than sexually abusing children, such as abortion or homicide.
Unfortunately, people like the influential Catholic journalist Michael Sean Winters, who writes for National Catholic Reporter and who loves to sort Catholics into rigid, neatly defined sets of left and right and sheep and goats, still don't get the problem. These influential spokespeople for the Catholic center, who want to exercise their influence by reading many fellow Catholics (especially those to the left of center) out of their definition of Catholicism and out of the conversation defining Catholic identity, keep offering us as bona fide Catholicism a strange mix of papal adulation (of papolatry, to be precise) and biblical-catechetical fundamentalism that turns biblical formulas, and the very words used in them, into sacred shibboleths whose meaning and cultural determination theologians are forbidden to investigate.

Pope Francis vowed last year that bishops who harm children will receive “no special treatment," but accused child molester Józef Wesołowski appears to be enjoying just that. While waiting for his trial to resume, the ex-archbishop is free to walk around Vatican City, according to a recent report by the BBC.
"Monsignor Wesołowski is not confined to his room. He can walk around the Vatican, around its 40 hectares [~100 acres],” said Ciro Benedettini, vice director of the Holy See press office, to the BBC. (This quote was translated by BishopAccountability.org. The article appears to have been published only in Spanish.)
If the BBC report is accurate, this loosening of restrictions raises urgent child safety concerns. The evidence that the former papal nuncio is guilty of serious child sex crimes is so strong that another Vatican tribunal took the extraordinary step of laicizing him. Unless he is heavily guarded at all times, unaccompanied minors in Vatican City could be at risk. (Vatican City’s ‘40 hectares’ include St. Peter’s Square, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors every day.)
Last September, Wesołowski had been placed under house arrest. Vatican spokesperson Federico Lombardi said the “restrictive measure” was imposed because of “the seriousness of the allegations” and was at the “express desire” of Pope Francis.
The Pope and Vatican officials clearly felt then that Wesołowski was too dangerous to be unconfined. Have they changed their minds? If so, on what basis? What measures are they taking to guarantee he has no access to minors in St. Peter’s Square and elsewhere?
Much is at stake here, from the safety of children to the credibility of Pope Francis’s celebrated pledge that no bishops will be treated as ‘daddy’s boys’ on his watch.
Already, the ex-archbishop’s detention in the VCS criminal system has been far more relaxed than that of Paolo Gabriele, Pope Benedict’s former butler, the only other person tried criminally in the tiny governate. Gabriele was arrested in May 2012 for stealing and leaking papal documents. Although his crime was non-violent and harmed no children – indeed, some regard him as a whistleblower – Gabriele was treated harshly before his trial. Unlike Wesołowski, who was given house confinement for the first 60 days after his arrest and was freed thereafter to move around Vatican City, Gabriele was locked in a Vatican jail for the first two months after his arrest, and endured inhumane conditions during the first few weeks of that period, according to his testimony at trial. His cell was so narrow he could not stretch out his arms, and it was lit brightly around the clock for 15-20 days in a row. He said he was sleep-deprived and depressed and that his vision was affected.
Given the high probability that Wesołowski is a dangerous man, Vatican officials should jail him or return him to strict house arrest.
If he is free but being monitored, officials should explain the details of the monitoring system, recognizing that the record of the abuse crisis includes many tragic failures of monitoring arrangements that seemed fail-proof on paper.
They should also inform the public of the date that the trial will resume, and explain why it did not resume third week of July. That's when the defendant’s hospital stay ended, according to the BBC report.
Pope Francis and the Holy See have been intent on controlling this case from the moment they spirited Wesołowski out of the Dominican Republic without reporting him to local law enforcement. At the very least, they now must prove to a skeptical international community that a former high-ranking church official can be prosecuted impartially by the tiny theocracy's untried criminal justice system. (AP) — A bankruptcy reorganization plan filed by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese
of Milwaukee would add 33 victims to the group receiving payouts for clergy
abuse. But advocates for those victims claim that the reorganization would hide
documents on abuse by priests who haven't been publicly identified before.

Wednesday that all of the cases should be investigated by an independent panel
so the abusers can be prosecuted and prevented from harming more children.
In a
statement, the Milwaukee archdiocese responded that it has "worked closely
with abuse survivor attorneys to provide full transparency" and has taken
steps "to ensure the safety of children."
The
reorganization plan needs approval from creditors and a bankruptcy judge. A
confirmation hearing is scheduled to begin Nov. 9.

According
to the 103-page plan supplemented by nearly 300 pages of documents, about 330
victims of sexual abuse by clergy will receive more than $21 million. The plan
also creates a $500,000 fund to provide therapy for all victims, including
those who may come forward later. Each of the archdiocese’s 199 parishes is
being assessed $2,500 to pay for it.
A hearing
to confirm the plan is scheduled to begin Nov. 8.
While 33
victims were added to categories of those who will receive some payment, the
creditors committee wants more included. Among those included are victims who
had lawsuits dismissed in state court in the 1990s after the state Supreme Court
found that the archdiocese could not be sued for negligence. The archdiocese
filed for bankruptcy almost five years ago just as a number of other cases were
about to go to trial after the same court said the church could be sued for
fraud for not removing known pedophiles.

spoke to NCR following a press conference about the organization held on the
steps of the federal courthouse in Milwaukee where the bankruptcy case is being
heard by Judge Susan V. Kelley. The case was filed almost five years after the
first of four mediations failed to result in a settlement.
The
original plan filed with the bankruptcy court offered $4 million in
compensation that would have been shared by 128 of the 570 who filed
complaints; the rest would have received nothing. The revised plan filed with
the court on Monday Aug. 24 offers $21 million to more victims but still denies
compensation to 124, some of whom had received earlier settlements.

(AP) - A group of clergy sexual abuse victims called Tuesday for an independent
commission to investigate molestation accusations sealed in a bankruptcy case
involving the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
The move
comes a day after church lawyers formalized a $21 million settlement between
nearly 400 abuse victims and the archdiocese. It advances a position the Survivors
Network of those Abused by Priests has held for years: that church officials
shouldn’t be the first authorities to review clergy abuse reports.
The
victims’ group fears the settlement would expose only some of the abuse
allegations, but church officials have firmly maintained that claims have been
properly and transparently investigated and that they’ve worked to make sure
children are safe.
In the
settlement filing, the church outlines the steps it has taken, including
conducting annual outside audits, which have resulted in “exemplary reports
from the independent auditors.” It also says that every report of clerical
sexual abuse of a minor, provided the accused cleric is still alive, is handed
over to prosecutors.
The
settlement shows that some of the accusations and associated narratives have
been reviewed by victims’ lawyers and published on the archdiocese website in
accordance with a 2013 court ruling.

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee would compensate more sexual abuse victims than it originally stated as part of a $21 million settlement announced earlier this month, under the reorganization plan it filed Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
Members of the bankruptcy creditors committee raised concerns about the archdiocese's announcement, saying it had excluded 72 survivors they believed were to be compensated when they agreed to the settlement in July. Thirty-three of those would now be eligible for compensation, according to the revised plan.
"We're much closer to where we thought it was going to be," said Charles Linneman, who chairs the creditors committee, which is made up of abuse victims but represents all creditors in the case.
"The archdiocese has worked with us in the last two weeks, and a lot more claims have moved to a higher class," he said. "And there's more to come that we are still working on."
Jerry Topczewski, chief of staff for Archbishop Jerome Listecki, said in an email that the church is continuing to work with survivors' attorneys to address questions regarding the treatment of their claims "and will continue to do so until the plan is confirmed."

The archdiocese filed for bankruptcy protection in 2011 to address its sex abuse lawsuit liabilities. The bankruptcy plan is scheduled for review in November, and church officials are “hopeful this is approved by the judge,” Topczewski said.

We are saddened that Peoria’s bishop says nothing about calling the police about a child sex abuse report against one of his priests.
Bishop Daniel Jenky says that Fr. Terry Cassidy has essentially been suspended because of an abuse report. But in his news release Jenky does not urge victims, witnesses and whistleblowers to call police. Nor does he say whether or not he has turned over Fr. Cassidy’s personnel files to police.
We hope Jenky gives all of Fr. Cassidy’s records to law enforcement. And we hope every single person who may have seen, suspected or suffered clergy sex crimes or cover ups in the Peoria area – whether by Cassidy, Jenky or any cleric – will call law enforcement expose wrongdoers, protect kids and start healing.
We also hope that Jenky will go to every parish where Fr. Cassidy has worked, begging anyone with information or suspicions about him to call secular authorities. We also hope that Jenky will send this same message through church bulletins, parish websites and pulpit announcements across the diocese.
Jenky and his and-picked panel obviously believe this is a credible allegation. Otherwise, they would not have made this decision and announcement. Only a fool would believe that a credibly accused child molester only molested once. So we call on Jenky to launch an aggressive outreach effort to both find and help other victims of Fr. Cassidy and to help law enforcement potentially prosecute him.

The Vatican’s controversial bank, IOR (Institute for Works of Religion), finds itself in the eye of yet another storm following Saturday’s revelation those who ran the bank between 1989 and 2009 are being investigated in relation to suspect real estate deals involving church property.
Senior Vatican spokesman Fr Federico Lombardi, on Saturday, said it had been the present management of the bank who had highlighted the current “problem” to the Vatican City state prosecutor’s office.
Media reports claim prosecutor Gian Piero Milano is looking into the sale of 29 church buildings between 2001 and 2008.
IOR itself issued a statement confirming that some months ago it had reported two former bank managers and one lawyer – former IOR president Angelo Caloia, former director-general Lelio Scaletti and lawyer Gabriele Liuzzo. IOR added that the case underlined the management’s commitment to “transparency and zero-tolerance, even with regard to suspicious events from the past”. The suspicious dealings came to light in the last year, following an assessment of IOR’s20,000 accounts by global risk-control group Promontory Financial.

VENICE, Italy Full-length films about two of Massachusetts’ longest-running scandals make their debuts at the Venice Film Festival this week.
One — “Black Mass” — covers the life of convicted mobster James “Whitey” Bulger. The other — “Spotlight” — looks at how The Boston Globe exposed the sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests.
The resemblance of the two stories is striking. Both are tales of shocking crimes, institutional corruption, cover-up and a crisis of faith that followed.
The first to premiere was “Spotlight.”
The movie is set in late 2001 as investigative reporters for the Globe secretly work to uncover the crimes of former priest John Geoghan. They search for his victims, and seek to obtain sealed documents that show what church authorities did — and, more importantly, what they did not do.
Walter Robinson, who is played by actor Michael Keaton, was the editor of Spotlight, the Globe’s investigative team that gives the movie its title.
“Reporters, we stumble around in the dark a lot,” Robinson said. “We started out focused on one priest but very quickly learned that Geoghan was the tip of the iceberg, that there were many, many other priests.”

Des clients français de banques suisses, défendus par un avocat parisien, ont décidé de se rebeller contre leurs banques, accusées de les avoir mal conseillés au moment de la régularisation fiscale de leurs comptes.
Une lettre datée du 24 décembre a été envoyée par leur avocat au Médiateur des banques suisses, une instance basée à Zurich, qui analyse les situations de conflits entre les banques et leurs clients, et qui propose des solutions.
Selon la procédure devant le Médiateur, appelé l'Ombudsman en Suisse, le client qui s'estime lésé par sa banque doit présenter son argumentation. Il doit également présenter la position de la banque qui doit lui répondre.
Dans le cas concret de ces clients français des banques suisses, il s'agit de personnes qui ont détenu pendant quelques fois des années, voire des générations, des comptes non déclarés en Suisse.
Le Médiateur analyse la situation au vu des documents présentés et propose une solution. Si la banque accepte, le dossier est réglé. Si elle refuse, le client peut aller en justice. Dans le cadre des programmes de régularisations qui ont été lancés en 2009 et 2013 en France, ces clients, indique leur avocat, "ont subi un important préjudice" et "leur régularisation va leur coûter aujourd'hui dix fois plus cher qu'autrefois". L'avocat réclame aujourd'hui à ces banques des dommages et intérêts pour ses clients lésés. Selon les milieux bancaires suisses, la première régularisation, celle de 2009, prévoyait des conditions beaucoup plus douces pour les fraudeurs fiscaux repentis.

US Wars in Afghanistan, Iraq to Cost $6 trillion

The decade-long American wars in Afghanistan and Iraq would end up costing as much as $6 trillion, the equivalent of $75,000 for every American household, calculates the prestigious Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
Remember, when President George Bush’s National Economic Council Director, Lawrence Lindsey, had told the country’s largest newspaper “The Wall Street Journal” that the war would cost between $100 billion and $200 billion, he had found himself under intense fire from his colleagues in the administration who claimed that this was a gross overestimation.
Consequently, Lawrence Lindsey was forced to resign. It is also imperative to recall that the Bush administration had claimed at the very outset that the Iraq war would finance itself out of Iraqi oil revenues, but Washington DC had instead ended up borrowing some $2 trillion to finance the two wars, the bulk of it from foreign lenders.
According to the Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government 2013 report, this accounted for roughly 20 per cent of the total amount added to the US national debt between 2001 and 2012.
According to the report, the US “has already paid $260 billion in interest on the war debt,” and future interest payments would amount to trillions of dollars. This Harvard University report has also been carried on its website by the Centre for Research on Globalisation, which is a widely-quoted Montreal-based independent research and media organisation.
In its report under review, the 377-year old Harvard University has viewed that these afore-mentioned wars had not only left the United States heavily indebted, but would also have a profound impact on the federal government’s fiscal and budgetary crises over a protracted period.
The report has attributed the largest share of the trillions of dollars in continuing costs to care and compensation for hundreds of thousands of troops left physically and psychologically damaged by the two wars being discussed here.
The report states: “The Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, taken together, will be the most expensive wars in US history—totaling somewhere between $4 trillion and $6 trillion. This includes long-term medical care and disability compensation for service members, veterans and families, military replenishment and social and economic costs. The largest portion of that bill is yet to be paid.”
It asserts: “Another major share of the long-term costs of the wars comes from paying off trillions of dollars in debt incurred as the US government failed to include their cost in annual budgets and simultaneously implemented sweeping tax cuts for the rich. In addition, huge expenditures are being made to replace military equipment used in the two wars. The report also cites improvements in military pay and benefits made in 2004 to counter declining recruitment rates as casualties rose in the Iraq war.”
The authors of this report have warned that the legacy of decisions taken during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars would dominate future federal budgets for decades to come.
According to the Harvard University report, some 1.56 million US troops—56 per cent of all Afghanistan and Iraq veterans—were receiving medical treatment at Veterans Administration facilities and would be granted benefits for the rest of their lives.
It reveals:
“One out of every two veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan has already applied for permanent disability benefits. The official figure of 50,000 American troops “wounded in action” vastly underestimates the real human costs of the two US wars. One-third of returning veterans are being diagnosed with mental health issues—suffering from anxiety, depression, and/or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).”
The report notes that in addition, over a quarter of a million troops have suffered traumatic brain injuries (TBI), which, in many cases, were combined with PTSD, posing greater problems in treatment and recovery.
“Constituting a particularly grim facet of this mental health crisis is the doubling of the suicide rate for US Army personnel, with many who attempted suicide suffering serious injuries,” opine the report authors.
It maintains:
“Overall, the Veterans Administration’s budget has more than doubled over the past decade, from $61.4 billion in 2001 to $140.3 billion in 2013. As a share of the total US budget it has grown from 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent over the same period. Soaring medical costs for veterans is attributable to several factors. Among them is that, thanks to advancements in medical technology and rapid treatment, soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have survived wounds that would have cost their lives in earlier conflicts.”
The Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government report has estimated: “While the US government has already spent $134 billion on medical care and disability benefits for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, this figure will climb by an additional $836 billion over the coming decades.”
It notes that the largest expenditures on health care for World War II veterans took place in the 1980s, roughly four decades after the war, and that spending on medical care and disability payments for Vietnam War veterans was still on the rise.
Here follows the description:
“The most common medical problems suffered by troops returning from the two wars include: diseases of the musculoskeletal system (principally joint and back disorders); mental health disorders; central nervous system and endocrine system disorders; as well as respiratory, digestive, skin and hearing disorders. Overall, some 29 per cent of these troops have been diagnosed with PTSD.”
The report goes on to argue:
“Among the most severely wounded are 6,476 soldiers and Marines who have suffered “severe penetrating brain injury,” and another 1,715 who have had one or more limbs amputated. Over 30,000 veterans are listed as suffering 100 percent service-related disabilities, while another 145,000 are listed as 70 to 90 percent disabled.”
It reads:
“The worst of these casualties have taken place under the Obama administration as a result of the so-called surge that the Democratic president ordered in Afghanistan.”
It mentions that the Walter Reed Medical Centre, US Army’s flagship hospital at Washington DC, was treating hundreds of recent amputees and severe casualties, adding that this facility had received 100 amputees for treatment during 2010; 170 amputees in 2011; and 107 amputees in 2012.
The report has also stated that the US Marines have suffered an especially high toll.
The report points out:
“Massive direct spending on the two imperialist interventions continues. With over 60,000 US troops remain in Afghanistan, it is estimated that the cost of deploying one American soldier for one year in this war amounts to $1 million. These troops continue suffering casualties—including in so-called “green on blue” attacks by Afghan security forces on their ostensible allies. As they are brought home, they will further drive up the costs of medical care and disability compensation. The US is maintaining a vast diplomatic presence in Iraq, including at least 10,000 private contractors providing support in security, IT, logistics, engineering and other occupations; as well as logistics support and payments for leased facilities in Kuwait.”
In its conclusion, the report not only seeks to dispel illusions that ending full-scale wars in Iraq and Afghanistan would produce any kind of “peace dividend” that could help ameliorate conditions of poverty, unemployment and declining living standards for working people in the US itself, but makes it clear that the legacy of decisions made during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts would impose significant long-term costs on the federal government for many years to come.

Prominent academic and author Dr Michel Chossudovsky warned that the so-called war on terrorism is a front to propagate America’s global hegemony and create a New World Order.
Dr Chossudovsky said terrorism is made in the US and that terrorists are not the product of the Muslim world.
According to him, the US global war on terrorism was used to enact anti-terrorism laws that demonised Muslims in the Western world and created Islamophobia.
Elaborating on his argument, Dr Chossudovsky said that NATO was responsible for recruiting members of the Islamic state while Israel is funding “global jihad elements inside Syria”.
Dr Chossudovsky, who is also the founder of the Centre for Research and Globalisation, further emphasised that the global war on terrorism is a fabrication, a big lie and a crime against humanity.

We, the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS), salute the heroic resistance of the Kurdish people and their army in Rojava, the YPG/YPJ – People’s Protection Units – against the criminal gangs of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) in Kobane, one of the self-governing cantons of West Kurdistan (Rojava) in Syria.
We call on all the more than 300 ILPS member-organizations in 38 countries around the globe to take initiative and express their solidarity and support to the Kurdish people's resistance in Kobane and the whole of Rojava, or join the demonstrations being organized by the Kurdish liberation movement in different parts of the world.
The ILPS condemns the super-terrorist US for creating the ISIS monster that has rampaged through parts of Syria and Iraq, committing hideous crimes against the people in areas that they have overrun. We condemn Turkey for collaborating with the US in creating, arming and coddling this horde of terrorists.
ISIS and similar extremist Islamist terrorist groups like the Al Qaeda and Al-Nustra have been created by the US as part of its over-all scheme to remake the Middle-East, by carrying out regime change in such countries as Libya and Syria that have dared to assert their national sovereignty against imperialist plunder and war. For its part, the Turkish government is using ISIS to attack the Kurdish liberation struggle led by the PKK.
ISIS terrorists have been trained by US Special Forces in secret NATO bases inside Turkey and Jordan. For the last year and a half, the US has been developing what the world has now come to know as ISIS. Turkey has allowed safe passage through its borders of jihadists from different parts of the world to join ISIS, and has facilitated the transport of wounded ISIS terrorists to be treated in hospitals in the Turkish province of Urfa and other cities in Turkey.
The US is remaking the Middle-East in order to consolidate its hegemony in this oil-rich region. It is using the ISIS in the same manner as it has used Neo-Nazi gangs in the Ukraine to stir up trouble and force regime change, toppling the duly-elected president, and replacing him with a pro-Western president and a fascist military junta as part of US-NATO strategy to encircle and pressure Russia.
In the wake of the hideous crimes of the ISIS, including the massacre of Shiites and Christians, and the beheading of Western journalists, the US has pretended to adopt a policy of opposing ISIS and carrying out bombing raids against ISIS. In fact, the US is still thereby using the ISIS as the pretext to violate the national sovereignty of Syria.
The US war planes are actually bombing food granaries and buildings in Syria which are away from ISIS positions. They are now in a position to attack the forces of the Syrian government. Turkey has also exposed its real dirty agenda to attack the Kurdish liberation struggle by bombing PKK forces in Oramar (Daglica) near the border with Iraq, relieving ISIS from the successful counter-attacks of the Kurdish fighters and allowing the ISIS to block humanitarian aid from Iraqi Kurdistan.
The Kurdish resistance forces in Kobane have said that they can defeat the ISIS without any need for foreign intervention such as that falsely offered by the US and Turkey. All they need from Iraqi Kurdistan are sufficient weapons and ammunition against the tanks and vehicles mounted with big guns of the ISIS terrorists.
The terrible crimes being perpetrated by the ISIS and the support given them by the US and Turkey have aroused the anger of freedom-loving people throughout the world. At the same time, the heroic resistance of the YPG/YPJ – the People’s Protection Units – composed of Kurdish men and women, has inspired the people of the world to rally in support of the Kurdish liberation struggle.
We must show our solidarity to the Kurdish people in their hour of need and give them all-out support until victory.

Dr. Cyril Broderick, A Liberian scientist and a former professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Liberia’s College of Agriculture and Forestry says the West, particularly the U.S. is responsible for the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Dr. Broderick claims the following in an exclusive article published in the Daily Observer based in Monrovia, Liberia. He wrote the following:
The US Department of Defense (DoD) is funding Ebola trials on humans, trials which started just weeks before the Ebola outbreak in Guinea and Sierra Leone. The reports continue and state that the DoD gave a contract worth $140 million dollars to Tekmira, a Canadian pharmaceutical company, to conduct Ebola research. This research work involved injecting and infusing healthy humans with the deadly Ebola virus. Hence, the DoD is listed as a collaborator in a “First in Human” Ebola clinical trial (NCT02041715, which started in January 2014 shortly before an Ebola epidemic was declared in West Africa in March.
Is it possible that the United States Department of Defense (DOD) and other Western countries are directly responsible for infecting Africans with the Ebola virus? Dr. Broderick claims that the U.S. government has a research laboratory located in a town called Kenema in Sierra Leone that studies what he calls “viral fever bioterrorism”, It is also the town where he acknowledges that is the “epicentre of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.” Is it a fact? Is Dr. Broderick a conspiracy theorist? He says that “there is urgent need for affirmative action in protecting the less affluent of poorer countries, especially African citizens, whose countries are not as scientifically and industrially endowed as the United States and most Western countries, sources of most viral or bacterial GMOs that are strategically designed as biological weapons.” He also asks an important question when he says “It is most disturbing that the U. S. Government has been operating a viral hemorrhagic fever bioterrorism research laboratory in Sierra Leone. Are there others?”
Well, Mr. Broderick’s claims seem to be true. After all, the U.S. government has been experimenting with deadly diseases on human beings for a long time, history tells us so. One example is Guatemala. Between 1946 and 1948, the United States government under President Harry S. against ISIS,
Condemn US and Turkey for creating
and using ISIS

We, the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS), salute the heroic resistance of the Kurdish people and their army in Rojava, the YPG/YPJ – People’s Protection Units – against the criminal gangs of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) in Kobane, one of the self-governing cantons of West Kurdistan (Rojava) in Syria.
We call on all the more than 300 ILPS member-organizations in 38 countries around the globe to take initiative and express their solidarity and support to the Kurdish people's resistance in Kobane and the whole of Rojava, or join the demonstrations being organized by the Kurdish liberation movement in different parts of the world.
The ILPS condemns the super-terrorist US for creating the ISIS monster that has rampaged through parts of Syria and Iraq, committing hideous crimes against the people in areas that they have overrun. We condemn Turkey for collaborating with the US in creating, arming and coddling this horde of terrorists.
ISIS and similar extremist Islamist terrorist groups like the Al Qaeda and Al-Nustra have been created by the US as part of its over-all scheme to remake the Middle-East, by carrying out regime change in such countries as Libya and Syria that have dared to assert their national sovereignty against imperialist plunder and war. For its part, the Turkish government is using ISIS to attack the Kurdish liberation struggle led by the PKK.
ISIS terrorists have been trained by US Special Forces in secret NATO bases inside Turkey and Jordan. For the last year and a half, the US has been developing what the world has now come to know as ISIS. Turkey has allowed safe passage through its borders of jihadists from different parts of the world to join ISIS, and has facilitated the transport of wounded ISIS terrorists to be treated in hospitals in the Turkish province of Urfa and other cities in Turkey.
The US is remaking the Middle-East in order to consolidate its hegemony in this oil-rich region. It is using the ISIS in the same manner as it has used Neo-Nazi gangs in the Ukraine to stir up trouble and force regime change, toppling the duly-elected president, and replacing him with a pro-Western president and a fascist military junta as part of US-NATO strategy to encircle and pressure Russia.
In the wake of the hideous crimes of the ISIS, including the massacre of Shiites and Christians, and the beheading of Western journalists, the US has pretended to adopt a policy of opposing ISIS and carrying out bombing raids against ISIS. In fact, the US is still thereby using the ISIS as the pretext to violate the national sovereignty of Syria.
The US war planes are actually bombing food granaries and buildings in Syria which are away from ISIS positions. They are now in a position to attack the forces of the Syrian government. Turkey has also exposed its real dirty agenda to attack the Kurdish liberation struggle by bombing PKK forces in Oramar (Daglica) near the border with Iraq, relieving ISIS from the successful counter-attacks of the Kurdish fighters and allowing the ISIS to block humanitarian aid from Iraqi Kurdistan.
The Kurdish resistance forces in Kobane have said that they can defeat the ISIS without any need for foreign intervention such as that falsely offered by the US and Turkey. All they need from Iraqi Kurdistan are sufficient weapons and ammunition against the tanks and vehicles mounted with big guns of the ISIS terrorists.
The terrible crimes being perpetrated by the ISIS and the support given them by the US and Turkey have aroused the anger of freedom-loving people throughout the world. At the same time, the heroic resistance of the YPG/YPJ – the People’s Protection Units – composed of Kurdish men and women, has inspired the people of the world to rally in support of the Kurdish liberation struggle.The acknowledged leader of the Kurdish liberation struggle, Abdullah Ocalan, has called on the entire Kurdish nation to mobilize in support of the resistance in Kobane. Kurds throughout the world have responded by organizing demonstrations in many countries calling for international support.

He says that “there is urgent need for affirmative action in protecting the less affluent of poorer countries, especially African citizens, whose countries are not as scientifically and industrially endowed as the United States and most Western countries, sources of most viral or bacterial GMOs that are strategically designed as biological weapons.” He also asks an important question when he says “It is most disturbing that the U. S. Government has been operating a viral hemorrhagic fever bioterrorism research laboratory in Sierra Leone. Are there others?”Well, Mr. Broderick’s claims seem to be true. After all, the U.S. government has been experimenting with deadly diseases on human beings for a long time, history tells us so. One example is Guatemala.
